View Full Version : Things to watch out for in a 2nd hand TJ
My brother in law is about to get rid of his 280,000km TP and will most likely be looking for a TJ auto sedan with less than 80,000km at somewhere in the range of $10-15K.
Are there any specific problem areas to look for on these cars ? What were the changes between the Series I and II ?
Thanks in advance..
Look out for idiots on the road who like to crash into them. Only thing I found.

Pealing rear screen, warped front passenger airbag, faulty fuel flow sensor, stuffed power window regulators, stretched hand brake cable, check automatic transmission fluid carefully, make sure the auto doesnt slip.

Check the engine mounts arnt cracked. The usual use a magnet round the body to look for putty incase it was in a crash.

Check the Auto both hot and cold they are not very strong , Vibration from the front wheels could be from the auto. Not cheap to fix.
My car has only done 70,000 klm and apart from the auto nothing else has gone wrong.
PS: No I dont drive it hard or wheel spin.

If the timing belt hasn't been done yet then i would advise to get it done either before or just after a purchase. :P

All auto cars aren't very good, not just TJ's. It depends how u drive it. I have a company car (Holden Commodore- 1yr old) only done 20,000km, was driving a few weeks ago when the auto made a loud bang and wouldn't go into any gear. Company had it towed to Holden, the gear box crapped itself $3800 later, warranty job tho....
Even when I bought my TS Magna brand new in 1996, the TR-TS KR-KS models back then had the most shocking reputation, always where in the press about poor manufacturing, I had quite a few letters from my dealership back then recalling all the TR-TS KR-KS models, mostly due to Auto and Engine failure, I had a few minor probs with the car slipping gears, and computer probs, but they fixed that, alot of ppl where having full motor and gearbox replacements, which I was lucky I didn't need to have
