Guys I just got the lifters replaced today for $403 including labour. I asked the mechanic to to fix the rough idle (which shakes the steering wheel and drives me nuts while in D ).
He replaced the lifters and i picked up the car in the afternoon. The car seems to run a bit better but that DAMN NOISE and VIBRATING STEERING WHEEL is still there. I don't know what to do about this, i'm taking the car back tomorrow morning i don't know what I should tell him and what to say should be fixed. Its quite annoying and i just want it fixed
If anyone can assist me it would be much appreciated
Btw its a 95 TS 2.6ltr Auto
Cheers

vibratng steering wheel could just be that the wheels need an alignment, after we had one the steering wheel was fine :)

You sure the noise isnt the chains?
Just tell the mechanic to have a listen to it and that it is still idling rough. Also show him the steering shake. Its always best to just describe or show the mechanic whats bothering you so that hes fixing the right fault. :D

My engine rattles too, had the chains done recently so that's not the problem, mechanic *thinks* it could be the bearing of the counter balance shaft.
Guess you will have to live with it, as I do

Thanks guys :)
I'll put penrite HPR40 25W-70 and give it a go.
The mechanic has to fix the cv's first then we'll see how that goes. Its just bloody annoying and embarassing

The mechanic who changed the chain should have removed the shafts and used the bypass.....
The Astron will idle rough if the idle is too low.
man $400 odd for lifters, that is rich. Last set I did cost the guy about 280 fitted. I would have done the stem seals and a service for that much
Use the HPR15 if your engine is not worn too much, 40 will be far to thick. Compromise to the 30 if you have to.

:D Thanks for the advice man
So what kind of oil again sorry? 25w-40 is it? 25w-70 is a no go?
*prays* please god anything just to keep that rattling to a minimum

Go the HPR 15.
The rattle may also be your balance chain, there is a little inspection plate on the front of the timing cover that can be removed and a base adjustment made. The second gen Astron did however have a hydrolic adjuster (at last) for the balance chain, if this is blocked which often happens you are up for a new chain set

ohhh so HPR15 is that penrite? Forgive me for not knowing much about the oil type
so 25w-15? So i know what to grab tomorrow hehe
And do you think its okay if i top up the oil with 1ltr of this HPR15 or should i just grab a 5ltr and fill the engine up? God i sound like a n00b

Drain the oil, replace oil filter with Ryco, penrite HPR15

Madmagna, any idea how much it would cost to remove the shafts and use the bypass????
dimi108...............Don't bother using hpr40 it won't quieten it, i've tried it

Damn will this rattle noise disappear? Is there any cure for this besides a new engine?
Some people say its the lifters, some say its the tappets and others say its the timing chain... i don't know what to address first. I just want the rattle noise to go and the rough idling that makes my nose itch at the lights

Ah the wonderful world of the Second Gen hehehe. If it dosen't shake, rattle and roll, it's not a magna!! Dude, rough idle causin the steering shake and be fixed by lifting the idle. The rattle is the timing chain. Mine does it as well. U can have it tightened but in 15,000 k's it'll start again. Replacing will keep it goin for longer but the rattle will come bak. Using decent Oil will reduce noise and make the engine run smoother, but it won't solve ur probs in this case.

 So there is no way to fix this noise!? Its there, forever?
Has anyone cured this annoyance yet? Coz if theres no way i'm going have to save up and look into an engine transplant (but i don't want to because that will take me a while to save up) Can't go on with these silly tractor noises

Does the rattle go away when you are reving past 2k? Does it happen only when the car is hot? does it rattle as you start it when it's cold?
I went through all this hassle with my TS cost a fortune to get fixed, cos i hate a noisy engine.

Well...This rattle…The problem is generally the timing chain and the fact that it has a hydraulic ratchet tensioner built into the oil pump. As your timing chain wears and stretches the tensioner that is built into the oil pump gets pushed out further to take up the slack.
The plunger on the tensioner is pushed by the oil pressure and a ratchet stops it from going back, this makes sure the chain is tight at startup, otherwise it rattles briefly before oil pressure is high enough.
When the plunger is out as far as it will go and the chain continues to stretch it rattles the plunger around and ruins the bore that it fits into, usually ruins the ratchet teeth also.
When u fit a new chain the plunger is pushed back in but because the plunger doesn’t fit so well now the oil can pass around it easier and a higher oil pressure is required to keep the chain from rattling.
This wouldn’t be a big problem except the ratchet that holds the plunger out doesn’t work very well(if at all) when half the teeth are missing so at idle and startup it makes a racket!
A tick is usually the lifters…A rattle is the timing chain…The balance chain has a manual tensioner so that usually doesn’t cause a problem.
Rattle solution: Replace the oil-pump/timing chain tensioner.
Not cheap. I ended up having to replace gears, chain guides, chains, along with the oil pump as they had been worn badly by the slack chain. I kept the old stuff as evidence of what happens but I think I through them out bout 6mths ago.
Hope that is of some help, hope it’s understandable! Any questions just ask!

Yes and no,
Usually in the first gen the timing chain but in the second there is also a hydrolic tensionor for the balance chaing and again this is usually the first on you will get as the ratchet type tensinor will prevent most of this noise from the chain.
Either way you need it replaced.
