Sometimes when its a hot day and i press in the go pedal, i can hear a ting ting sound at the engine. Is this what is refered to knocking ? The car doesnt miss or anything though. Just like to know if its anything to worry about.

Sounds a bit like pinging, try runing it on PULP and see if it goes away. If it does you might need to retard your base timing a tad. Pinging sounds like a sort of metallic rattle, frequent pinging is not good for the engine. :)

have you played with your timing lately?
ive come across a handful of astrons which randomly ping reguardless of timing. i can only assume it is caked up pistons raising the compression but have never cracked any of the suspect engines open to look.

Sometimes occurs when you've got a carbon build up that absorbs enough heat to initiate pre-ignition too. Pulp will help with that too. :)
Nice to see you outta bed TC, whereve you been bludgin lol

nah i havent played with the car at all. Im not to concenred because it only happeed when i need to push it (over taking, going up a steep hill) and when the weather is hot.
Thanks for the help i didnt think it was pinging because i thought it was meant to be louder and violent. I remember when my mums car did it a few times it sounded like the pistons were going to fly through the head lol
I might run pulp untill the weather cools down :)

Nah pinging can be quite subtle, it depends on how bad it is. Like I said most of the time its just like a metallic rattle. :)

Check timing, check plugs, try pulp and if that don't work get your'e motor decoked. It can be done with a professoinal sollution or just plain water if you now how .

If you can avoid the pinging yeah not much to be concerned about, but beware of the fact that pinging can hole a piston as quick as anything else  it's most likely to be a buildup of carbon in your combustion chamber causing a lessening of chamber volume, which in turn increases your effective compression without the usual performance benefit. It can also cause your car to run on a bit as the carbon acts like coal and provides your car with "spark" even once your ignition shuts off.
TC when I used to live with my old man it was just after a corner on an uphill section and nearly every small japanese car used to ping up there, i'd wince every time I heard an automatic come up that hill, sitting in 3rd gear going grindrattlerattle. Having said that tho the worst offenders were excels, not so japanese :P But never used to hear falcodores or european cars ping.

Hmmm....interesting.
My engine does the exact same thing. It only happens under load (going up hills), which is everyday for me. This is running both PULP and ULP. I suspected it was pinging, but also I've heard A LOT worse from other cars
Everytime I get the car back from it's servuce (by a Mitsu dealer) it doesn't seem to ping, then goes back to it's old tricks. There is never any mention of knocking after the service has been done....
Then again the only problems they ever bring to my attention are those that I have to pay for and arent covered by warranty, funnily enough.
