View Full Version : Bodykit fabrication
I'm thinking of making a complete bodykit for my 2nd gen magna. Not from scratch but by using the stock one as a template. I wanna know what ppl think i should do to get the mould of the stock bumper. By the way i know alot of ppl think its a waste of time but i couldnt give 2 ****s. I know the dimensions and all, i just want to know what ppl suggest me to use or warnings/ advice ideas etc.

use fiberglass to make a mould, then make a bar using the mould, get a front bar of similar dimensions and attach the two bars together. then just smooth all the joins, etc.

i dont need to. i know wat i'm doing and its all covered under insurance (if i do it right) and i'm not doing it for a while but i'm not an idiot, i didnt think som ideas and think they r piss easy (like most ppl my age).

Hey man let me know how u go!
if it turns out ok and u want to sell a set i might be interested!
I have a KR verada (same as TR magna apparently) I think this is 2nd gen.
Nobody has kits to fit these already except in japan or something.

its not just a case of making a mould, you have to have it mount to the car VERY solid. hanging fiberglass is surly going to crack and the bumper fall off if its not securly mounted. factory bumpers have a metal inner to brace them. still be a great thing to do if you pull it off, maybe even an investment if your good at it.
i'm well aware of this turbo charade, and i'm thinking very carefully about this and so far i havent come across something which is gonna destroy the bumper. I am going to reinforce the bumper with metal but i have to figure the best place to put the metal or else it might not work and/or be too heavy for a decent bodykit

Unfortunately mate, you'd have to get a smaller bumper for it to fit, as the KR bumper is bigger than the magnas.
I contemplated doing this awhile ago when i was bored on holidays, but didn't want to invest in $2-300 worth of materials for something i had no idea about.

Fibre glassing isn't real difficult to learn, just make sure you do some research before you jump in boots and all or it could get real messy and/or expensive. I reckon the best way to go about it would be to get your hands on another front bar(so you don't wreck your original) and work on that. You could even get one that is partially damaged as you will probably cut away some of it. this could save you some $. Your goal is to make a plug that a mould can be taken of. Hence you could make it with some plywood/fibre glass/bog or anything else that works. It doesnt have to be super strong or look pretty, just the shape you want it to end up. take this plug to a fibre glass mob and get them to make a mould for you and then a bar. It could get pricey at this point especially if you want the mould (the fibre glass mob usually want to keep them). However if you can get enough genuine buyers you might be able to make a deal to get your bar made for free if you can provide the fibre glass mob with further sales of the bar/bodykit. this is how my boss made a front bar for his rodeo minitruck(the plug was one messy piece. plastic, fibreglass, self tappers, bog you name it he used it) but it came up a treat and he sold five of them to pay for the production costs.
thanks for the info spider-ken, i thought about this before but i didnt think they would do it that way. (Make one for free as long as you provide more sales). I already thought about making it from another bumper as i dont want to be left without one in the meantime. This project is moving to the side as year 12 is starting and i cant afford it quite yet, but i'm still doing my research.
Dammit... I will give ebay and SSV a go. Thanx for the info.
(oops , better try WASV first heh heh heh)

Why not make it out of 0.8mm galv sheet? Lots of info online about making bends, corners, holes, joins, custom shapes and high detail items. This stuff is pretty cheap too. Used to make replacement panels for cars.
Thinking about a custom bonnet in this.

dave have a search youl prob find bout 5 threds by me about me making my body kit.Im most likely going to have a mould made from a special type of foam and have it machine cut to exact measurements so that i can simple throw on 4-5 layers of fibreglass or carbon fibre then its all ready to be fitted straight onto the car! This of course isnt the cheapest way to go but im doing it for my Design And Tech major so i want it to be of a fair quality and then if its good quality i can easily produce more to sell to pay back the money i spent on the mould and then perhaps sell the mould to a company! Anyway i still think the best way for you to go if you want to be able to reproduce it is to have a set mould makes things much simpler
Cheers,
Dean

i'll take a look, at it...seems good, but i think making the most dodgiest mould off an existing bumper (as long as it is symetric and smooth) should be cheaper and work out. If my mould works out i'll see if i can sell it to a company or something to get some money and so some 2nd gen owners can get some bodykits here...
note: i am starting year 12 as stated earlier and my income is zero atm, so this is on hold for maybe a year or so, it might be a side project at uni.
i'm not gonna really go to that much trouble to make this bodykit zoltanjr as i dont have that kind of money to spend, although i would do it if i was in your position. Thanks for the input and i'll post up pics etc when i get started.
