hey all, need a little help with my amp here.

last couple of times i have been in the car i have noticed that my system was lacking in a whole lot of bass but i hadnt had a chance to check it. just checked it now and my sub amp is in protect mode. how do i take it out of protect mode and get it running sweet again.

also what r some possible causes for this to happen?? i checked the fuse and it is intact. so have i blown my sub or is there something wrong with the ground?? i dunno help me out please.

the amp is a lanzar heritage HTG254 - http://www.lanzar.com/itempage.asp?MODEL=HTG254
and the sub is a JBL 1000W gto- something. and i had the gains set correctly so i wasnt overpowering it.

thanks heaps

Usually when the amp goes into protect mode, it;s one of these things:

1) Thermal - it's getting too hot

2) Impedence - the speaker load is too low (ie wired for 1 ohm when it's only 2 ohm stable). This is easy to do on bridged outputs, as each 'channel' of the bridged output only sees half the impedence. So if you are running 2x 4 ohm subs bridged of a 2 channel A/B class amp that is only 2 ohm stable, each channel will only be seeing 1 ohm, and then going into protection mode.

3) Wiring is shorting out somewhere - check the amp terminals, and ALL speaker terminals. You might have bent speaker tabs or lugs so they are touching. I Usually wrap them in elecky tape to insulate them.

4) Power wiring not up to scratch - you are running a 600W amp off 12 guage wire. If the amp can't get enough power, eventually it will turn off. Best to make sure you are running decent power, and check your grounds are clean and tight, and are metal on metal, not just metal to paint. Sand the paint back with some 800 grit sandpaper if you have to. Also, add and extra ground to the negative battery terminal... 4 guage should be enough for this.

This amp has some serious power, it should be running 4 guae power wiring minimum.

Hope it gives you somewhere to start looking.

Reminds of the good old times when we ran 2 x Tornado 10" subs @ 2ohms through a amp that wasn't 2 ohm stable.. For a $100 install including H/U in our old charade it was good! Lasted MONTHS!

As MitsiMonsta said.. Check Impedance (ohms), Power, Shorts in the wiring & the Temperature!

when my amp wan't working it was because it was not grounded properly. so i reccommend you check that as well

do i have to do something to take the amp out of protect mode, like flick a switch or something?? or will it do it itself when i fix the problem. it is just constantly in protect mode. i took the sub out and it is still in protect mode. does this pinpoint a particular problem??

thanks for your help.
