i have a 4 cyl carbie TR and lately its been acting weird, it has this strange rattle kind of sound that use to be faint but has gotten louder, its hard to explain. But thats not the only problem. The other problem is that when i accelerate sometimes the car just shudders really bad as if i'm trying to take of with my rear wheels chained to a brick wall, once agin its hard to explain and its only selective, another description of this is as if it accelerates and then stops and then tries again until the rev's are above 2500 mark. The cars a manual, any ideas on what the problems are. It's probably gonna be costly (i'm getting my engine mounts replace this week but it doent make sense for it to be them as its not constant, like i said its kinda random timing for it to happen, but it is only when i accelerate as far as i can tell.)

check all ur spark plugs/leads. myn was doing exactly the same thing, then i realised i was only firing on 3 cylinders cause one lead on the distributer end was loose

at first it was intermittent, but the shudders got worse and must have shaken the plug right out

Also check your battery.

yeh, ive had the same sorta problem for ages now! ive been to a couple of mechanics, and all of which had no real explaination, except thinking something was wrong with the carbi. ive changed all the ignition leads and sparkplugs. Mine only really happens when the engine gets warmer, and when i accelerate, especially up hills on a warmer then usual day, the engine loses power, and struggles to climb. mines a 2.6 auto tr. anybody got any ideas? any suggestions will be appreciated.
cheers

well although it sucks that ur having the same problem, it kind of relievs me a bit so that i know it isnt the gearbox as mine is manual, i think its the carbie and i think it can fix but im not sure quite yet. There is a pipe going from the exhaust (underneath the exhaust manifold) to the airfilter, and i think this may be upsetting the carbie on warm days as it seems to be there to refeed the exhaust thru the system to burn the exhaust a bit more (This is not the pipe that heats the intake, thats on top of the manifold). But yeah i pretty much dont trust this pipe:confused:

This pipe from your exhaust heat shield to your aircleaner is known as a stove pipe, there shoudl be a bi metallic spring which will close a flap.

The reason for this in on a cold morning you can get what is known as carbie icing, this happens as the air passed through the venturi, the air speeds up and causes a low pressure area which is where the fuel is sucked up from the float chamber.

Do not remove this if you want your car drivable in winter

If you have a carb car, the shudder and hesitation is most likely your accelerator pump in the carb, this little plunger squirts raw fuel for a second when you alter the throttle opening to make up for the fact that the carb is a little slow in increasing the fuel flow.

An efi set up does this job with the pulse width of the injectors

so thats what that pipe is, thanks Mal.

But still wat can i do about my accelration problem, it never used to do it before. Would removing the carbie and cleaning it up do anything. Or is it a bit more serious. And which side did u say the v6 engine mount was different to the 4 cyl.

My guess is that the fuelpump is dropping the pressure heavily , what happens then that the carby tends to run out fuel especially under heavy loads, it'll be somewhat similar to engine lugging when selecting to high a gear.

I'm thinking the rattle noise could be the timing chain. Nasty sound they are. Not cheap to replace either.

i found out what the noise was. The dickhead who fitted a cover over a belt bent it in and it rubbed against it every now and then... No charge for replace after i went to the mechanic, he also replaced leads and distributor cap for free and i barely paid anything, by the way just wondering has any one discovered that there harmonic balance looks like its been levered off with a crowbar? (tried to any way) I thought this was ****ed so i got the mechanic to check it and he said the same thing. Retards must have owned my car previously

Changing the distributor cap and leads fixed my acceleration problem too
