View Full Version : New speakers for a 95 Magna
Hey guys, I'm in the process of buying some new 4" front speakers for my magna, what would you suggest? The depth of the hole for the speaker is only about 30mm so I dunno if i'll be able to find speakers that thin?
Any comments/suggestions please feel free.
Thanks.
i didnt check what car u got but if its a 2nd gen, i havent found 4" speakers which will fit. I came to the conclusion of rewiring the speaker to go to the door and put a tweeter up there. Its so frustrating, why would u make a speaker that cant be replaced???
Yeah it is a 2nd gen Magna, i'll have a look around and see what I can find, Hopefully something.. Anything would be better than these stock ones that have been popped and sound like a tin.
Yeah i knwo what u mean, i still have the stock speakers in and one has blown, my mum did it  . I i'm saving up for 6" pro series pioneer splits. It's the best option mate, trust me. I did a BIG search, i even thought about cutting the dash but there's something under the plastic thing. Stupid speakers:doubt:
*edit: The pioneer speakers are just my preference
Thanks for your help champ.. I'll look at putting in something else then.. Just such a waste of space now that I can only listen to the 6x9's in the back :(
At least u hav 6x9's i only have the one front speaker, i have a TR 1992 GLX, it came with only wiring to front speakers, i have put all the wiring to the back but no speakers yet, i tell ya it sux, all my friends have great sound system, even my friend with a datsun pulsar:rant:

Ya know there is a search button, i've posted this reply more than once.
ANYWAY, ANY 4" speaker will fit, if you take out the stock speaker you will notice a thin piece of plastic going accross the hole, this thin bit of plastic does jack sh!t all. So in saying that, get out your old stanley knife and cut the centre of it out, and hey presto! Any 4" speaker will fit. Make sure the 4" speaker allows for the corner to bend off, as from memory i could only fit 2 screws in.

Consider saving up for 6's in the doors. Will be a much better improvement.

After just paying $2000 for a new clutch, gearbox and transmission I'm kinda on the low end of the scale for having a full wallet..
Eventually I'll be putting in 6.5" splits, 2 subs, amps etc.. But that money (my system money) just turned into my 'making my car move forward' money...
Thanks for all your help guys.. Appreciate it!!

I removed the plastic, and another piece under that and STILL only have barely 40mm to play around with... i spose i can sit it up on a couple of washers or somethin... Thanks mate!
EDIT - Another question (kinda newbish), is an amp NECESSARY for a sub?? Thanks..

Depends what you mean by neccessary. You can run a sub off the HU, but you probably wont be able to hear it and it will sound really really bad lol. Yes you will need to amp a sub. (some hu's have small sub outs though i do believe).
AS for the 4", 40mm is heaps, not many magnets would be bigger than that.
Thanks for the reply.. I'll look into a amp + sub then.. Hope the 40mm is enough too!
Thanks everyone for your input, muchly appreciated..!
could u acurately measure the depth of the highest part as i want to know if my speakers will fit in my car instead of my friends. They hav a mounting depth of 46.3mm.
I'l'l do that for ya today mate, and let you know as soon as I do both in a P.M and in here for everyone else ;)

Im thinking of either buying 6x9's tomorrow and getting them installed or buying replacement 4" ones from strathfield car radios. But if you guys say 4" speakers wont fit in then i'll prolly have to get the 6x9's instead
How do a good set of 4" speakers sound though? They sound any good? Or not much difference from them stock speakers? Like I do they sound like little computer speakers or... not bad? hehe

A good set of 4" speakers dont sound better than a pair of 6", but much much better than stock. And they will fit.

Get a set of 6"s, if the 4" wont fit, then you might as well forget 6x9s and throw in a set of 6 inches, it'll sound better.

Hey thanks for the reply! Well as long as they sound better than stock! Stock is just craaaap :sook:
Do a good set of 4" speakers at least have alright bass? Or no bass at all?

I had replacement 4" speakers in mine. Wanted to go Pioneer but wasn't sure they would fit. So had to go Kenwood. Sounded okay, much better than stock. Stock ones were all pressed in and damaged. They were 100W , the ones I got. Not much bass at all, but then again, the only reason I got them was because the droning/hissing from the damaged stock ones were annoying me.
If you have a headunit, 6x9s and 4" speakers in the front , all aftermarket, you should have a pretty decent system on a budget. This is pretty much exactly what I used to have, and it sounded good. Not bad for $400 of audio. I had a Pioneer 200W headunit, Pioneer 2 way 6x9s and Kenwood 4" 100W front speakers. If I could do it all over again, I would do it right and get an amp and sub etc, but it depends how much you like music, and how much you want to spend.
For me, not worrying about thieves stealing stuff in my car, meant I was happy to not go all out.

Fair enough! Sounds good! I'm going to go out and get some 6x9's put in tomorrow see how that goes! Dunno if i should leave the stock 4" in with the 6x9's or just have all the sound going to the 6x9's
Hmmm :)

I recently built a budget stereo for my car and i dont think u can really get better value than i did. I got a 2nd hand pioneer head unit off ebay that works perfectly(about 2002?). Has everything u really need. That cost me $72. Then i cut into the door trims with a mate and put in some response 6" 2 ways for $40 and cut threw the parcel shelf and put in some response 6x9 5 ways for $50. So for $162 i got a pretty decent system for the money. By the way the response gear i speak of you can get from your local Jaycar store and all thier gear is considered VERY good for the money. The whole install would have taken us about 1 FULL day to do, but this was the first time either of us had done a install, and included ripping off and cutting into the door trims and also running new wiring for the front and rear speakers, if we did it a second time it would be much quicker.
