View Full Version : Focal V Hertz
I am about to replace some fake ( ) focal 165V2 components with some legit, off the shelf jobbies. I will be quite happy to go into tonkins and pick up the real thing (because i know every thing will fit) but i will listen to some bostons and am also interested in some hertz high energy 2 way splits.
I dont have the opertunity to listen to the hertz speakers so i am wondering what you guys think. how do thay compare to the focals.
I am running them off a 2x80WRMS amp by the way. and will be adding a sub to the system soon (almost definately one of the hertz 10" subs)
The focal tweaters only just fit in the factory locations (which is where i want them, so dont tell me to move them), will the hertz tweaters fit?

Hertz are a good speaker to get loud, they will take a crap load of power, midbass is very pronounced.
The focals sound much truer albeit with less power handling.
Bostons are definetly a great all rounder and can also handle heaps of power.
I have a pair of the Hertz mids, ran them for a while, no longer my cup of tea as I find they dont sound very 'real', but they are well built and wont disappoint if you are trying to keep up with a lot of bass in the boot.
Peace

Hertz is well named, coz that's what your ears will be doing after a prolonged exposure to them. Bloody loud, great for Doof heads who also want a decent SQ in their speaker too. If I was building a big doofmobile, then the HSK163 3 ways would be on the shopping list.
Focals are very tightly balanced speakers, nice flat response, but won't make the same level of bang as the Hertz. If you prefer more 'normal' music (pop, some rock, ambient, chillout) then these will fit the bill. Possibly the most normal speaker you will get before going to the upper level, like Morels or Dynaudio's.
Bostons are great, ultimate mix of SPL and SQ. If you want loud, turn them up and you get very loud. Turn it down a bit and the SQ is unbelievable for something that just about near knocked your head off about 30 seconds ago.
I think I would go the Bostons if you wanted a nice balanced system. If in IT, nobody ever got fired for buying Intel, then in car audio, nobody ever got shot for installing Boston. MMMMn G5 subs

I'd go hertz hsk-165 splits
I'd go hertz hsk-165 splits
Any particular reason why?

because they're the "crunk" of value for money splits.
They go hard and sound pretty damn nice for what you pay. Pick them up for around ~$300-320ish i believe.
I'm getting rid of my JL Audio VR600-CSi's next and replacing them with a set of these Hertz splits, you won't be disappointed.

How much power he got running to the splits? Hertz subs are damn nice too, along side electromedias audison amps. Can't beat italian **** :)

He might not have the upper mid range set as high as the Clarions as the Clarions really peak around the 3-5Khz mark which is the most sensative section of the human ear. If he boosts around 4kHz ( if he can ) you will notice all of sudden how much louder it is.
Hmmm is he running the HX300d? Lets just say that if you think they are loud, you should hear the HXS300 Spl version  :shhhh:
ok, i havent totally ruled out the hertz yet, but it seems they are more of an SPL speaker, and i want SQ.
For a similar or lesser price (400ish), What line of boston splits would compare well to the 165V2 focals.
I am leaning towards the focals, just because i know how good they sound. There is no hertz dealer in adelaide that i know of, and the boston dealer seems to have closed for a while.
Other than that i will just have to take your word for it.
Also, remember that they will never get more than 80WRMS, so power handling isnt important.
