View Full Version : TP 5 spd problem
Have got a problem with my TP, the gearbox (5 spd) sometimes i have trouble with a very stiff gear change it is only an intermittent problem but i would like to try and fix it before it gets any worse, it also jumps out of fifth gear and has done so for a while but there doesn't seem to be any irregular noises in the box itself. (It doesn't have to travel very far so i never really got it into fifth much anyway!)
I have checked the oil level and that is fine, and the clutch pedal is a bit spongy but i have changed the fluid and bled the air out ok
Any ideas?
Thanks for your time

I'd place money that your engine mounts are stuffed.

sounds like your clutch isn't fully disengaging. If its not disengaging then it will have to crunch the cogs a little to engage. This will cause a rough change aswell.
Cause is probably either a faulty hydrolic system ie; master or slave cyl, or your pressure plate and clutch disc is worn.
Bleed your clutch again. Have someone loosen the bleed nut for 1 second while you push the clutch peddal in as if it was going to take 2 seconds. That way there is no chance for air to get in to the lines when you have the bleed nut loose and your peddal is fully depressed.
Then get some VMX80 and change the gearbox fluid with that.
From there, if that doesn't fix it, all you can do is replace the worn parts.
the member CAD had a similar problem and found a rod had bent somewhere
and he modified it if it wasnt cad it was someone in the same post before chistmas
seek him out and ask his advice or if he remembers the post ?
lucky its not a tm box the fifth gear was operated by a vacume device
gearbox noises the 5 speeds all did if your sure it isnt the throw out bearing clutch or main shaft bearings put some gear noise reducer product into the box
try a more expensive gear box oil ??????
When i was having trouble with my 5spd it was a combination of a bent clutch master cyl pushrod and a worn pivot bolt inside the bellhousing... its a bastard to get at... but you put a spring washer behind it to give the clutch lever more lerverage therefore disengaging the clutch more efficiently. good luck!
