Finally got the auto sorted. On the way back from paying the mechanic, i think i came real close to running out of fuel. I was able to re-start a few times & made it to petrol station however, now it will not idle, if it goes below 1000rpm it dies, i'm thinking it's crap in the idle jet of the carby, what's your opinion please.
Are the jets removable with the carby on the car? and how easy is it to get the carby off the manifold, bearing in mind if it takes longer than 1/2 hr it will need to go to the mechanic again.
thanks in advance for your replies.
Damien

I'm reading both my manuals and they contradict each other.

I'll get back to ya if no-one else does. :D

the idle "jet" is most likely on the end of the idle cut of solinoid or held in by it at least. wip that out and smash inside the hole with compressed air and/or carbi cleaner. check the jet then reinstall.

failing that.. rev the car right up to redline (astron 4800rpm lol) and then jam a rag over the top of the throttle to create a huge vacuum within the throat of the carbi. this is sometimes enough to draw through the gunk clogging it up.

Thanks for the replies guys. If it's that time consuming it's beyond the capabilities of my back. Looks like a date with Jeff's Service Centre in Noble Park on friday.
I have the tools & compressor I just don't have the physical health to lean over the engine for very long.

Cheers
Damien.

maybe just replace the fuel filter will only take ya 5 mins and a generic one from supercheap can be picked up for as low as $2.50. also maybe try some of that wynns carby/fuel injection cleaner fuel addetive to your tank then fill it to the top with petrol. that should help clean out any crap in the system. worth trying b4 ripping that carby apart, its a POS to work on.

Hi,
you have dragged up some crap from the empty tank, first thing to do is the rev it up to maybe 1/2 revs and seal the top of the carb with your hand/rag; this will usualy suck anything out. Do it a few times with more revs until it clears. But the fuel filters will still need replacing, but at your own leasure.
good luck

would there be a danger of the suction hurting your hand ?
what about the rag getting sucked into the carby ?

thats why I start at 1/2 revs and go up when you get used to the suction, a good rag wont go far.

Well Murphy does it again, it appears i didn't run out of fuel, simply a coincidence that a badly corroded carby chose this time to block the idle channels and cutout solenoid airways, i should have remembered the symptoms when it started running on at switch off, i had the same overun prob with a pissat a few years ago that was solenoid related, and i've had to switch of the TM in drive for months now.
My mechanic is having probs getting bits for the carby i may end up with a reco carby.

Damo, if you don't mind cleaning, or recoing it, my carby will be available rather soon.
