I'm just wondering if anyone has any overheating issues with their amps? Specificly Jaycar ones.
I recently bourght one for my sub and had it going for around 3 hours straight, and not at a very high volume. The protection light came on and the amp shutdown, for ever. Fuses and all that were fine. I had to take it back to jaycar and i'm gonna pick it back up tomorrow.
I have two amps, they both sit on opposite sides of the boot. I did a quick and dirty job and just slapped some valcro on them and they sit nicely on the boot carpet.
Do they really need cooling? (It was an extremely hot day the day i had it on)

I was thinking of pulling out the spare wheel and closing the amps in the spare wheel compartment. But even with fans, the small compartment would only make them hotter with no fresh air getting in true? What can i do?

Ah, and while i'm here. I got two 6.5' coax speakers for the back shelf. Of course the shelf only supports 6 by 9's. The speakers sit in there fine but they can't be screwed in. How could i go about fixing this?

This is why we advocate you buy the best quality amplifier you can possibly afford, even if it means saving with no bass for a few extra months. The Jaycar amplifiers are very good but bare in mind they're made to a price. If you need titanic amounts of power you'll need higher quality amps. After all, you don't see Top Fuel dragsters running on Repco engine parts do you? ;)

lol i'm not looking for 'titanic amounts of power' at all, i'm looking for the most efficent method to mount my amps.

^^^ that just went straight over your head didn't it :D

Get the wiring and ventilation right first, any amp that shuts down in your boot being mounted on your floor is suss, my mate has a boss amp and a coustic amp in his boot and never has a problem. If it overheats, get a fan.

Could be many reasons including faulty equipment, speaker cables shorting out, faulty speakers, etc etc

ah hehe, i just read his post again and i understand now. :P
I'm pretty damn sure i have the wiring done correctly, and i have gauge 2 for gods sake, i can asure you thats quite enough. :P
If the amp isn't getting enough power than it isn't going to shutdown and have the protection light come on.
I'm asking HOW i should get ANY sort of ventilation going, its a boot, there arn't exactly any fresh air pipelines running into it (as far as i know). How would i put PC fans on it?

EDIT: The cabling COULD have shorted out...maybe. I really doubt it though, i had the cabling done pretty well. You should know that when it did die, it was like a 40 degree day and im in a black car AND the boot was fairly full of stuff.

All that is required for adequate ventilation is a couple of inches of room above the amp. The heatsink does most of the work, you just need some air above the heatsink.

I also raise my amps a bit to assist with ventilation underneath.

You dont need moving air for most applications.

You would know if it was overheating, I've only had amps go into protection a couple of times from overheating and they are too hot to touch.

Requires running them at 90% for a while though, so you'll know when you get close

you slow or something... He's running 2ga, as he said above.

2 ga is more than enough.

DJ DD - For your rears make up a baffle using 12mm mdf for your rears to sit on.

haha, ok, settle down. Its just cable. :P
Thanks for the info s_tim_ulate, i'll see how it goes. Something COULD have fallen on it and created a lot more heat.
Anyway, moving on to the speaker mounts. Whats a baffle? Do ya have a pic handy so i get the idea?

Clicky -tks asylum... (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showpost.php?p=429054&postcount=1)

just a solid mount for your speakers that seals off the front wave from the back wave. This increases midbass response

Oh wow, nice one!
Thanks for that s_tim_ulate.
