hey people,
i just spoke to AAMI my insurer today, to tell them about my alloys etc, and they said i have to check with Vicroads about the roadworthiness of my wheels, which i thought was wierd.
Anyway, i called Vicroads, only for them to tell me that since the stock wheel is 6", i could only go up one size, which makes a 7" wheel rim the largest.
Now i have 235/45R17's on 17X7.5 rims, and according to Vicroads, the car is unroadworthy with this rim size, and AAMI reckon if i were to stack the car, it would be a "claim for consideration" - which to me means they won't pay a f****ing cent.
does anyone else have any words of wisdom on this, or anyone had this happen to them??

im in the same thing at the moment trying to find out what i can and cant do to my car, and theyve told me the same thing

another interesting thing, i bought it from a dealer with these very rims and tyres on it, with a roadworthy certificate.
i'm wondering whether i could get the dealer to pay for replacing the rims coz its obviously not roadworthy then is it ????
hmmmmmmm

well in that case id go back to the dealer and say its not road worthy and you want something done about it and see what they have to say.
also tell the insurance company this and see what they say?

wow 6 inch rims. thats smaller than my door speekers. i think they r wrong. but i was told by (racq QUEENSLAND). that i can have ne size as long as they dont stick outside the guards. but most insurers let u go up 2inches

Nope. Standard size is 15x6, Vicroads lets you go one inch wider than stock. This is why I've been on my never ending quest for the perfect 17x7 wheel for the last few months.

If the problem is with AAMI, switch insurance.
I had to.. I told AAMI i put 19x8s on my car and they said that is way too big and very illegal.
I switched to Just cars and they told me what "ei.ke.verada" said, as long as they don't stick outside the guards. They also told me that the total size of the wheel (rim & tyre) have to be the same size as the stockies.
Only thing is now the idiots who put my wheels on gave me the wrong load rating so I should go and get that fixed ASAP otherwise i won't be insured!!

far as i know you can only go 25mm wider track
wheels can not foul on the inner guards or anything else
and tyres cant go past the guard
my patrol was 31/10.5/15 they now are 33/12.5/15
and this is legal
then i have 2 inch lift in springs and another 2 in the body
so about 6inches all up all as far as i know is fine in qld

I think the VICRoads rules say that you can be a max of 2.5cm bigger diameter and width than the biggest wheel fitted to your model - so long as it does not foul or stick out of the wheel arches - someone posted a jpg or pdf file of the VicRoard regulation on this sometime ago...
So I guess with the Magna since the biggest standard wheel is 17x7 then the biggest wheel allowed is 18x8 - but I don't know if this depends on the Series - did Series I VRX's have 17x7 wheels?
I would think if the car does not fit to roadworthy rules you could be on shaky ground whatever the insurer. If it does fit in the roadworthy rules then get another insurer or get VicRoads to accept it as roadworthy - get a letter from them/get a roadworthy certificate.
If you got it from a dealer with a roadworthy certificate - get VicRoads to look at your car print a defect letter and take it to the dealer?

The stock wheel is 15X6, and so you could go to a 17X7 in and 17 inch wheel, but i have a 17X7.5, which is too large.
so yeah, i think i may do this, go to Vicroads and get them to put in writing that it is unroadworthy, and obviously the garage that did the RWC can lose their Vicroads tester licence if they refuse to rectify the problem. At least then it will be an issue between the dealer and his mechanic and not me.
will update you all in time.

It all comes down to what your tyre placard says. If you have a series II Exec, it'll have a tyre placard different from a series II VRX.
If you can find a wheel in 20x7 Vicroads won't care either - as long as the rolling diameter stays within 1.5cm of the orginal. (I could slightly be wrong with that figure, thats from memory)
It's just that damn width that sucks.

What about if you got them engineered. The rules in NSW are about the same but i had mine engineered so now AAMI is happy as my 20x8.5`s are legal..:P

I posted a topic about engineering my wheels a little while ago asking for opinions. Sounds like a bit of a pain in the ass, as well as a hit in the pocket of about $500.

go get an engineer to ok the rims for roadworthyness and get a mod plate. at least thats how it works in QLD. also in QLD i believe 2" lift is max legal without engineers cert also believe tyre size to be increased by 2".
