Just wondering if you had $1,000 on parts only, ie not including installation, what setup would u go for?
1 headunit, 1 amp, 1 sub, 1 pair of speakers in the fronts doors with tweeters in dash, 6" speakers in the back? what?
I was guessing 6" in the doors, with tweeters where the stock dash speakers normally go for the front. sub and amp, with the sub being in the boot. And 6" speakers in the rear of the car... does this sound okay? I'm still a noob at car audio.

$1000 wont get you that much unless you get sale prices on everything.
$150 for a reasonable HU
$600 for a 12' sub and suitable amp.
$250 for speakers.
Personaly Id recomend a good HU, decent 4 channel amp and some decent 6x9's and 6' splits. this way you wont have crushing bass but everything else will go pretty loud and you can keep an eye on the for sale section of the forum and wait for a cheap sub and amp to pop up.

Okay let's now assume the $1,000 doesn't include a headunit because you already have a good one. What would u spend the $1,000 on for car audio?

for $1000, i'd just spend $500 on decent speakers and $500 on a decent 4-channel amp. no point buying subs for that price

What he said.
A good pair of HIGH end 6x9's and a HIGH END pair of 6 inch splits driven by a 4 channel amp with enough juice to meet the 6x9's power requirements will give you good clear music that touches on high, medium and low range sounds. It wont give you as much doof as a big sub, but the rest of your music will have more clarity and voice than a system that has sacrificed amping the speakers for a sub.
I have a decent HU (not anymore its ****ed, but it was good) 6 inch splits, 6x9's and a 12 inch sub. Now I have bass galore if i want it (i keep it turned down, but i could really pump it if i wanted to) but my incar speakers let down the show because they distort before they reach good volume levels.
If you do the 4 channel amp and speakers you have a good system to expand from, something you can live with till you have the extra scratch to put a GOOD sub and amp in the trunk. I have a 4 channel amp on my wishlist for future expansion. I wish id bought one instead of a sub.

Well seen as though you have a headunit i would go with this setup but amp the front splits with the jaycar amp and use the headunit money on a small monoblock to run the sub. Then run the 6 x 9's off the headunit or not at all.
Simple entry level CD player with at least 1 set of RCA outs. - $150-$180
SoundStorm 4x450w Amp $200
for front MTX 6" 2 ways, 100w running off Head unit $100
some decent 6x9'z $150 running off amp
JBL GT4-12 1000w Sub - $80 bridged off amp.
buy a sheet of 18mm MDF for $20 and make a 1.25ftcu box to suit.
Wiring $80 or so.
Total cost about $800.

ok heres your system
head unit - JVC 665 (think thats the number) -$300
splits - moral pulse or hertz -$300 ish (check out fhrx, he will do you some good deals)
sub - get a jbl 12" from strathfield of jb hi-fi for $88
amp- jaycar 4 * 100 (will run splits and sub no problems) - $250 max, grab one off ebay for this price
total = $938
wiring will use up the rest of the $62 easy, and make your own sub box, isnt hard to do and better to get the proper volumn anyways
cheers

If you already had a decent headunit I'd look at
Midbass/sub bass
2 x Morel Elate 9's - (rrp $305 each from fhrx) Second hand 2 for ~$400
http://www.sovico.co.kr/pds/product/1232_m.jpg
Install behind stock door trims on mdf baffle
Tweeters/midrange
Vifa Ring radiators from www.advanceae.com.au = New $98 for the pair
http://www.advanceae.com.au/catalog/images/xt25tg30-04big.jpg
Install in kick panels
Door prep
1 litre sound off spray/paint on deadener = $55
for back of door trims and spot rattle finding
1 door pack of stinger roadkill for doors = $135
2 x acoustic tiles from jaycar = $13
place behind the woofers to stop reflections
Leaves $300 for a second hand 4 channel amp and rca's.
Any decent 4x100w rms (better than jaycar, boss, avalanche, sony etc) with good crossovers to allow a highpass of 1.5khz for the tweeter and a lowpass of around 1.5 khz for the midbass. Otherwise factor in a little bit of money for custom crossover using caps n coils.
There you have a kickass system the Elate 9's will happily play full range. You have enough deadening to keep the doors solid too.
All you need is a days labour to get the 9's into the doors. (easily done)
Peace
Tim

theres a great dealer on ebay who sells the jaycar mono for $311 brand new, and the 4 channel for only $237 or something like that. i think there name was "evildeece"
i saved over $100 on the mono through them so if your going to get a jaycar amp, definatly go through ebay.
there has just been a price hike in them as a week ago i got the mono off the same dealer for $268
