Conclusions

The winner had to be either the Verada or Berlina, and we'll give it to the Mitsubishi but with some reservations. Chief among these is the performance of the 3.0-litre V6. Yes it is well ahead of the Aussie built sixes in terms of refinement but given it's rather weedy performance it is difficult to see why it is better than a Magna.

The Berlina is starting to look dated in areas - why no split seat?- although it's as fast as ever and will please those that prefer RWD any day.

The big winner was the Fairmont which impressed for it's performance, lowered NVH levels and equipment levels. But it is still a less than weirdly device, and although we doubt the owner of this sort of car will consider chucking it through a mountain pass or around a race track, the Berlina and Verada prove that the cakes there to be had, it can be eaten too.
