not a clue man. ive wanted to do this thou. esp after my trip to Kalbarri. (now i have some added red dust). i was thinkin maybe a high pressure air spray. (like the high power water gun for cleaning cars except just air) so no water damage. hhhmm, apart from that, i dunno. giving it a good wipe down i guess. and yeh if you wanna paint, go for it. no stoppin ya

before i had my accident, my engine bay was dirty as.... i mean dirty!!! after when i got my car back all fixed up, the bay was clean CLEAN!!! all shiny metal...

so just go to a smash repairer and ask.... cos i was pretty impressed with what they did.

The LAZY way;

Use high pressure hose

The WAY that I do it;

Get down all dirty with cloths and degreaser and wipe every nook and cranny of the engine bay with the degeaser, then use another cloth with warm water to clean off the dirt, after which, you can let it dry itself or use yet another cloth to wipe it dry..

Just did a mates VQ statesman ready for a shoot in WHEELS...

All we did was spray degreeser all over..let it sit...then wash down with a normal hose...dont go using a high-pressure one unless you know exactyl wot u doin!
After u was it al down...get old cloths or chamos n dry it all down n clean lil bits with a tooth brush n ya cloths...come up schmick!

Not a good idea! especially with all them electrics in there..

Nothing like shooting off a wire or something...

so basically, i would work oright if i left my engine as is , and just degreased it ? should i worry about any wires, filters etc? or just spray on the degreaser and wipe it off (with a warm wet cloth apparently)

all replies are appreciated,

cheers

use a hoshold house...or better a watering can...

Stay as far away from electrics a you can...u could b an unluky guy n *** sumfin...if its a pod...change it bak stock n clean like that...

wipeing off takes to long...i recomend use a watering car...

I know HPH is not a good idea too... I don't do that... I rather spend 2 hours using my hands :roll: :D

it's probably a good thing to disconnect your +ve battery terminal if you're going to spray water into the engine bay... then lit it dry off naturally before connecting it up again.

hey... didn't they use to clean engine with steam once upon a time at service stations??? haven't seen around anymore though...

Why disconnect the battery?

Unless you get one bit of unbroken water that touches both terminals, it wont do any harm. And the chances of that happening would be far in excess of a million to one.

Also by d/c-ing the positive, you'll reset your ECU. So that means you'll have to let the car idle for about 15 mins to get it to recalculate everything again before you drive it.

I've degreased my engine bay a million times, all I did was put some degreaser in a spray pump bottle and sprayed around the car, then hosed it all off with the garden hose. Engine bay comes up clean as a whistle every time. I dont even have to cover anything up.

For all of us that own older cars... a plastic bag over the distributor and coil is the go right? Stop water from entering there and causing a no-fire situation. :(

I guess it should be obvious you only use cold water on a cold engine so you don't split the block or head/s.

i did mine today, bought 2 cans of degreaser spray form super cheap for $2.50, sprayed it on, got a clothe, wiped all the shit off, got a semi wet rag and wiped the rest off....it came up schmick as.....

Yeah if you're not sure then definitely plastic bag the dizzy.

But they're pretty well sealed motors so I cant see any problems arising.

Just a note too..

My idiotic friend did the plastic bag thingy in his pod for his WRX and washed his engine bay.. then he forgot to remove the plastic bag and started the engine.. Wooooosh... Sucked the bag and disfigured the pod hahahhahahahahahaha....
