Magna Buff,
i'd like to thank you for your time today to look at my TN, i never thought i could learn so much about magna gearboxes and magnas in general. And just so you know the Overdrive Work Very Well.

So anyone who wants to know anything about these misunderstood boxes Magna Buff is the MAN..

:bowrofl: THANK YOU :bowrofl:

i had a quick look under stagmas tn auto pan it has 13 bolt hole pan and no drain plug either
and 10 mm head bolts still think the tp pan will be a close fit but unsure for certain
still suggest getting a nut welded on the inside of your pan and a drain plug the tps have them on the side of their pan my tps are 13 bolt pans
Is his TN EFI? If so the basic transmission is very similar, only the gear ratios and electronics are meant to be different.

Then again Mitsu might have changed it for the sake of it :bowrofl:

I'll have to look at my TN Elite partsmobil when I pull the rack out.
The tranny in the TN is a KM177, the TP is the KM177-6. As I said the diffeerences are few.

Hi Magna Buff. Just read all your posts on auto trans. You seem to know what your talking about. I have a slight problem with my auto in a TS V6 wagon, 1996. When slowing down to stop at lights or stop signs (Yes we do stop at them in Sydney) the transmission gives a loud thump as it changes back to low gear before the vehicle has come to a halt.

A friend told me to adjust the throttle position sensor and that would fix it.

Any suggestions what it could be and a possible solution.

PS It does not happen all the time. If I slow down very gently it is less likely to happen then if I come to a sudden halt.

Regards

make sure ur engine mount arent stuffed before u worry about the trans . that might be what the thump is. but if it's not and is a trans prob magna buff will be able to help

Magna Buff,
I have a TP SE with 4 speed auto. It develops a shudder from around 80km/hr, but only in overdrive, as if I switch off the overdrive, it disappears. Can you suggest any ideas? TIA, Michael

the most likely cause of this will be your O/D clutch i had mine fixed a while back but for now drive with it off as you may cause some damage, Magna Buff may still have the spares to you need to do this, he'll most likely be on-line tonite

Stagma,
Thats alrite about driving with o/d off, as at the moment, the car is off the road as it lost oil pressure and got the death rattles. So, I'm going to pull the engine out to rebuild it, is it hard to replace the o/d clutch? Regards Michael

No it surprisingly easy to change as it's actually on the out side of the box, where abouts in queensland you located?

Not throttle position, but accelerator pedal switch faulty or in need of adjustment.
According to the genuine mitsubishi manual, the gear box remains in second gear when you pull up to the lights, even when it's sitting there idling. This helps to reduce forward creep and idle smoothness. Then when you hit the gas it selects first faster than you can blink yer eye and yer away.

you can here the solinoid click if theres a car beside you to if you tap on the pedal

The TS 2.6 Saga continues....
Just got the coil fixed...running great .....now the auto!!!
Symptoms....From start up it will take off in 1st, shift to 2nd, then 3rd but wont engage 4th! Stop at the lights and it takes off in 2nd into 3rd, NO 4th. I have set the fluid level, adjusted the selector cable, tried to multi test the inhibitor switch but the connector is different than that in the manual. Have check the overdrive switch, it is ok.
Had a strange sound coming from the tranny when I switch on the ignition and engage Drive with the engine stopped. It seems to be coming from the front where I assume the 4th gear solenoid wire goes in.
Any Thoughts Welcome.......or off to the Tranny Doc??

Thanks Moz!!

magnanamouse,

If it is taking off in second gear it is most likely accelerator switch when you are idle the switch is open circuit when you use the pedal it's closed circuit, this is what make the gear box go back to first.

The noises that you hear from the box while the engine isn't running are normal.

If fourth gear isn't engaging it is most likely your overdrive clutch has worn out please read the previous posts as this is quite common.

If you have anymore questions just ask

Cheers, Chris

I gotta a problem for you, how do u disable the torque converter clutch in my TP wagon(it doesn't have 2 wires off the temp sender), as mine isn't working e.g. it shudders(slips) underload

red wire = dampier clutch solenoid on km175-1, either at the tcu or trans. km175-2 might be red/white at transmission. couldn't tell you for a km177-X though...

i know this cos i've been developing an auto shift kit providing firmer shifts and better response for the km175-1 (could more than likely be adopted for km175-2 or km-177). been doing this for a while now but been to lazy to actually try anything...

either will be a piggy back or a TCU designed by me, running my own software and microprocessor (atmel or PIC more than likely). more than likely piggy back though using a PIC with program written in asm.

i've even been too lazy to change my fluid and filter. slips, flairs and shudders in any gear... and if your lucky you can get it to select overdrive some days. still will pull good burnout or two - incredibly easy in the wet... :D

not just the torque convertor, its all the friction surfaces (clutches), remember only 1 band and a lot of clutches

just a basic question for ya, will engine braking eventually damadge the gearbox? i do alot of mountain driving and its way to heavy on the pads, also is it possible to make the downshifts when dropping it down a gear to brake happen faster theres quite abit of delay. i have a mate with a shift kit in his AU and his engine braking is instant so i was after the same effect.

Cheers! oh yeah if it helps the box is '90 TP

this is a km/h table as to when each gear kicks in and out TM-TP
the black line is normal driving the arrows are upshift/ downshift ranges
The TP overdrive can be engaged above 70 km/h (not shown on this graph)

Anything outside these lines is harsh driving and will in time damage the box

man my transmission sucks b*lls

Quotes to get recond: $1950.00 + overdrive
$1600 Max (not sure about overdrive is included)
$1100 Min (same as above)
$1800 + overdrive

Not many of my mates are mechanics only 1 and he dsoent deal with transmissions, where I get my car done said my transmission is getting old, they adjusted the bands as best they could but it will eventually need an overhaul.

Can get one, from a TS '94 model and the TCU which I believe has had 183,000 done on it, note my current one has 300,000 on it and I dont think its been overhauled ever, just serviced.
$for about $500 delivered to my house (Trans+Tcu+freight)

If anyone is from melbourne and has the tools and the willingness to help me get this done who knows what there doing and where I can get all the parts, over a weekend or during the week, I would be happy to pay you for it and buy some beers

someone help meeeeeeeee! *dies*

Just a bit more info on the shift patterns the side of the graph refers to your throttle percentage so for instance in a KM177 you hold your throttle at 40% it will change to 2nd 25km/h

i have posted a pic with all gearbox models included in TN magnas

i would help ya if you were in adelaide

it might be cheaper to put a manual box in - $300-$400 can get you all the bits for a manual... i paid around $1200 for my auto to be redone. i would have put a manual, but i was unsure about loosing my license so we kept it auto so everyone else can drive it. turns out that i didn't loose my license, and now i have a expensive auto box (which i treat it like poo lol)

hehe be in melbourne!! umm manual dosent interest me at all, I hate start/stops especially in busy traffic, im lazy so auto is my favourite.

I might have to just get the $1600.00 done and forget about it, I hate blowing that amount on a car I cant even sell for that much
