View Full Version : Exhaust now farty and tinny
Hey,
The extractors, high flow cat, 2.5" exhaust with resonator (using my existing straight thru muffler) got put on today.
It sounded a lot deeper and throatier when started at the exhaust shop and a slight pedal press just made it hornier. It didn't sound tinny/farty at all.
Leaving i put my foot down it sounded ok, then above about 3000RPM it just comes on like a badly sounding civic on steroids. Performance is better, but no performance is worth this.
What can be done to solve this?? I'm thinking firstly adding another resonator, failing that, putting a non high flow cat in.

Being a 3.5L - I'd have to ask what kind of rear muffler you are running?
I've got full cat back piping, plus a resonator, plus a high flow cat.......... and my car sounds anything but 'farty'.
What did it sound like before the work you just had done?? and how long had you had the muffler fitted previosly?

with my exhaust system standard 2.5inch with resonator and connon i found it was because the ppl that installed it didnt put sufficient rubber supports on there ask them to weld some more supports and rubbers on the rear muffler coz mines the same i think that is the problem hey
Super cat muffler...kinda on the small side. I've had it for about 15 months.
In use to sound deep and 'wooshy'. It was slightly droney but never attempted to sound tinny at all. If anything it lacked any variance in pitch. Put your foot down and it use to sound a bit like an R33 coming on boost.
You could be right ei. I was thinking a similar thing. A resonance occurs and the thing starts to shake like a mofo.

yer and with my car it only sounds like that inside wen im driving.... get someone to put thier foot down in neutral wen u outside the car and u might see what i mean. i think the vibrations inside the cabin make it feel as though it sounds funny but it duznt,,,, then again urs might b completely different!

The exhaust sounds different under load. So when revving under neutral will sound different than when in gear.

you only kept one resonator in? put the second one back in.....
refer to this thread about my exhaust system plus you can have a listen too :)

The only put one hotdog in. Just called the guys and they said that it will sound tinny until things start to carbon up in a few days. And they left enough space for another resonator.
The ressy thats in there now would be lucky to be about a foot-foot and a half. So I'll give it a few days and put another resonator in. Hopefully that will solve the problem.
Your's sounds sweet. My new zorst sounds similar up until 2500RPM....very deep with a rumble. I hope with time and a second res, it will sound like yours :)
Wish I recorded my old exhaust note for a comparsion....but 60hr weeks don't allow much time to play.

my old muffler used to sound nice but tinny and raspy is higher revs .. some ppl ,may remember it from adelaide, i just changed it over to a cannon and it sounded alot better and gained power... i think my exhuast has crumbled inside, there for making the noise and a restriction, though ur exhaust is brand new so that shouldnt be ur problem

yeah when i got my exchaust i found it wasnt tiuny at start but after awhile it gets tiny....now i have to put a new resonator in
I just had it fixed an hr ago. Replaced was the 12" dog resenator. In was a more standard 'centre muffler' type resenator. Sure I may have lost a kw or 2, but at least now it sounds acceptable.
Before it had the massive throaty sound with a subtle rex rumble at idle that just exploded into a symphony of bass, rumbles and ultimately farts when the foot was put down.
Now its as quite as it was before the extractors, cat and and 2.5" piping, perhaps even quieter than just the straight through muffler with stock piping. Now I'm back to my r33 whoosh, im happy..

Why do all you people put huge exhausts on magnas???
I'm a Magna owner but even I am smart enough to know that they sound like ****e with milo tin exhausts.

have you stopped to think that maybe your car is actually an R33?

2.5" isn't a huge exhaust. The stock exhaust is about 2.3" to 2.4" in diameter. And my muffler looks almost the same as a VRX muffler, with the single outlet bent down at the back. I think your mistaking this forum for the honda civic forum.
The problem was they put a resonator that was way too small for the job, no doubt to keep costs down.
I'm a Magna owner and I knew there was a big possibility of it being farty and told them 'I don't want it to sound farty'....they ****ed up.

It will be once I put some fully sick nizmo stickers on it.

It all depends what your definition of 'farty' is. To some it will sound 'throaty' or 'meaty'
I like a nice deep exhaust note that gets a real buzz when going WOT. Kind of like a twin turbo Supra on WOT......

my system is soo bassy that my mirrors go blurry at ANY throttle application, at any revs.
But it is a 4 pot, so the bangs are better seperated. Does anyone else pop and crackle like a whip on over run?

4 banger...meh, you should hear mine backing off after giving it a stab up to 5000rpm, bang pop bang bang pop, i got a vid some where of me driving down the street at night in first gear, a fanged it to the red line then backed off and it shot a good 2 foot flame out the exhaust! for a second or 2, its rather impressive, but now since i bingled my car the middle pipe on the front bank extractor has got a bit of a crack and it doesnt scream like it used to :doubt:
