For some of us, we have clear rear indicators (being verada lights or the frosted tail lights), and clear side indicators. But the front indicators are still orange! So here's a small guide to a little mod i did 2-3 nights ago of how to remove the orange lens.

1. Remove your indicators from the car, theres a spring latch thing you need to unclip first from inside the engine bay behind the indicator. Once you get that out then the indicator pushes out and u just twist the globe out.

2. Pre heat your oven to 150deg. Put ONE indicator in at a time. Leave it in for 5-7 minutes.

3. use a small screwdriver to start prying open the lens, then use your hands. Use some of those thick fabric gloves that you can get from most hardware stores. The indicator will be hot! Be careful not to let the threads of glue spread onto any part of the lens. Ideally dont remove the lens totally, 90% off is good enough

4. Use a phillips head screwdriver to unscrew the chrome lens inside, then remove that and unscrew the orange lens.

5. re screw in the chrome lens and push the outer lens back into place.

6. put in the oven for 2-4 minutes, and push the lens back in place as hard as you can (this is just to make sure its in its right place and the glue has filled all the gaps)

7. Buy yourself some of those chrome finish indicator bulbs. You can get them for around $20 from most auto shops. These bulbs come up invisible inside the indicator but flash orange. Using orange bulbs is just a waste in all your work, the indicator will look orange still

Extra tip - if you do happen to spill any glue threads on the lens or body, put the indicator in the oven for 2-4 minutes, then spray some wax & grease remover on the lens, wipe down with a cloth and that should clean it up

Sorry for the crappy pics, but don't have a digi at the moment.

good tutorial, but has been covered for years here (http://www.thegalantcenter.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=53). yes the tute is for the galants, but still been done so many times on there, that i think theyve perfected it ;) but i think urs is pretty damn similar, just the galant ones dont have the advantage of just being able to take off the indicator alone!

Yeah i know its a widely covered diy, for galants and heaps of other cars. Thing is some people (including myself) dont read other forums so would not normally know of being able or how to do this.

Does the light still flash orange?
You can get orange flashers that have clear lenses, wouldn't it be easier just to replace the bulb?

J-PaP
21-01-2006, 03:26 PM
Yeah the chrome finish indicator bulbs still flash orange, but dont look orange when they arent flashing. No you cant just replace the globe because its not the globe thats orange to start with, its the lens inside the indicator.

spackbace: i just read the indicator thread in the galant forums. Mate breaking the orange lens is NOT easier.

I actually think it's easier on the 2nd gens, ask TuffTR he's done it. Pretty sure all he did was just replace the globe and take out the lenses alot more easily, which is why i assumed the 3rd gens would be easy too.

well if the 2nd gen has the lens inside too, this guide would be the same. Theres only two ways to get the lens out, break it out and pul it out through the globe socket, or way ive put up. Found this way a lot easier and less fiddly than breaking it

nice tut WTCHME

basically i think it is the same for one peice para's, oven, unscrew, screw up, back in oven

im gunna have to def get some of the chrome finished indicators tho! didnt kno they existed

please note tho John, whilst pushing as hard as u can be careful as the lense can be pushed in whilst doing this (happened to me on my para's) i learnt my lesson but i also had to use fan forced heat as my one peice paras wouldnt fit in the oven so i had to do it wit hthe door down and the only way to get good heat oto the light was fan forced

make it real easy, go to your local autobarn, get them to ring "all-crash" order the clear ones and off you go.... simple !!!!

While i'm at it... VT commodore clear side repeators (The indicator on the front quater panels) fit straight in - in place of our ugly orange ones, and are very hard to get out - so no prick can knock em off later. - again buy at autobarn or a holden dealer for around $30 a pair.

yeah ive done it
so easy for the 2nd gens
yank out indicator
scream
yank more
swear
try to break cover
yell
smash orange cover
swear
pull out pieces
swear
put in new bulb

piece of pi55

looks good on the 3rd gens though, a very unique mod at that
IceSports - we had a very generous member by the name of Nexus offer us mitsubishi clear ones for $26 delivered and registered post, why go holden when you can go mitsi and save $4 ;P haha

looks awesome [WTCHME] - Vic Reprazent!

I've always wanted to remove the egg yoke, but i'm not sure i'm keen on dismantling my Paras, maybe if I had a second set...

were you the one who pm me today asking for tinted ones? I am sorry if I cant get them, pm me again to talk about it as I deleted them accidentally. But if you did a search some guys have already stated the ORIGINALS cost $20.50 from dealers? and they are clear, is just that they are not as chrome as the ones I sold.

cheers!

A 2nd set? Now don't be selfish...

Anyways, Watchme, good write up mate, i may actually do this by the looks of the photos it looks sweet. Just one question, are the chrome finish bulbs legal? Just want to know if they are illegal won't nessacarily stop me from doing it...

I had the same sentiments, but i gave it go and will do it again (and i even stuffed up  but u cant really tell that there a small amount of plastic pushed in on the lens :P )

Are the 1 peice or 2 peice Akko?

Is it possible to remove the 1 piece lights from a Verada without pulling the bumper?
I belive the chrome/orange globes are legal, at least the Phillips ones are.

I've done my 2nd Gen indicators - the break, twist, snap, swear, snap, pull, scratch, swear, twist, snap, pull - method. Works okay, but did get a couple of scratches on the inside of the lens.
Might try this 'oven' method next time.
Thanks.

Hi all,

Just did my front indicators too, and got the 380 repeaters. Thought I'd post incase someone wants to see what it looks like on silver.

Came up 100%! Thanks WTHCME.

While we're talking about clear repeaters... does anyone know where you could get clear ones for a TL/TW? They're a really weird shape and the guy at Mitsu gave me an even weirder face when I enquired there. Tried searching but the forums don't like two letter terms

Dont think there were any. Sorry as much as I love the TL/W this was something they didnt do as you said weird shapes clear indicators. Look at it this way, is still looks cool whether is clear or not, dont be disappointed. I am pretty sure I did not seen one with clear indicators.

Hmmm it's just a personal thing. My rims are shadow chrome with a grinded metal polished face, and the paint is metallic silver. Everything matches really nicely except this indicator that sticks out like a sore thumb. See the thread in the general forum about the new guy with a purple TW.. it'll look so much cleaner with a clear indicator imo.

lol, but he didnt have one. I know what ya mean but as this was their last Magna chances are zero unless someone makes them for you. Is like the BMWs one series had them and the older ones did not. Is a pity that Mits didn't know the trend of things? I feel disappointed now when I see a new car that still comes in orange indicators, goes for any brand let it be Toyota or Honda. I cannot for one say that they dont know their marketing skills etc.....but it could be simple reasons that is easier to get normal bulbs than orange bulbs, theory. Fashion wise I like clear indicators.

no it wont.. if done carefully....

when you pry the glass apart... just make sure the sticky seal doesnt go everywhere... cut it off using a razor and try to make sure the seal is covered evenly around the blinker for when you stick it back on.....:D

I think is an easy process but you must be dare enough to do it. Frankly You hardly know the difference until someone really points it out to you. It would be great if someone could make the side indicator 'Clear' as crystal just like the paras. I just find that if I want it this way I would go 1 piece paras.

Good info guys! Once I find some clear blinker covers here in the states I'll have to remove the orange from the marker light too.

Leave the glue that was orignally on there, if you don't feel that you have a good enough seal, then put a bead of silicone around the outside edge of the 2 pieces of the headlight.

Digging up an old thread... but I'll be doing this to a pair of 2nd gen ones and 2 3rd gen ones sometime soon. I hope. Is the oven better than a heat gun/hair dryer?

TiMi

Doing these now, TR ones went allright, 150deg fan forced, lens has a slight dent in it but its still good... On to the 3rd gen ones.

3rd gen ones glue is a lot stringyer...

2nd gen lights need about 10 mins and they open up, but ive got a fair bit of glue to clean up now.

Heated some of them a little too long and they had a slight indent in them, only really noticeable up close (I hope)
