It's got either of 2 engines, If it's the V6 it's a 3.0L 12v motor, if its a 4 cylinder its a 2.6L 8v motor.
If you are unsure, show us a picture. As for performance, main things to look at are:
Cold air intake with K&N panel or pod
Pacemaker Extractors
2 1/4 inch exhaust catback with high flow muffer (for 4 cylinder)
2 1/2 inch exhaust catback with high flow muffler (for 6 cylinder)
Thats about it really before you get into the hardcore modding like cams/turbos etc. There are little kits floating around, Barry has a couple of little kits like fuel rail and earthing kits which help the engine run abit smoother.

lift the bonnet. if it says "2600" on a peice of metal in rather large lettering, its a 2.6l 4cyl

i dont think me engine has that, i dont think the TR/TS astron has 2600 written on it, unless my engine is missing it.
this is what the 4 cylinder looks like:

Your a Knob Sidewinder ROFL!!

i would of thought the easy way to know what engine it is, besides the size, is to actually LOOK at it, and if its a V shape, hell you got yourself a 6 there, or if its straight, looks like a 4 maybe.........and wouldnt this be in your owners manual anyway?

just for the sake of it heres mine;
