i'm looking at my car door and i cant seem to see an easy bolt straight in way for me to put in 6.5" speakers. I only have front speaker holes in the frame, not on the trims. So has anyone got any tips as i am making a bracket for the speakers but i would like any advice etc...

the only tip i can give you, is that you sure as hell wont be able to fit them straight onto the door trims..i was only just able to fit 6" speakers this way..and they have to sit out about 3-5mm to fit on the door trims

The mounting depth is fine (i forgot to mention that before) but to fit the 6.5" speaker covers in i have to cut into the door trim, i mean i have to cut into just above the flat area and just below. I'll try make a photoshop so i can show you.

here is what i mean.

The blu circle is approx. 6.5", what i have to cut out.
The other is a 6" speaker.
(the car in the pic is not mine, my door trims dont have the material parts)

yeh thats what he's talking about. You wont fit 6.5 inch speakers there without cutting it or extending the speaker out abit. My 6inches JUST fit like he said :).

If you want, practice on one first, they're only like $10 a piece, if you stuff up its cheap to buy another one etc.

im bit confused, isnt the 2nd gen verada door speakers 6.5"?

nah youd be better off just buying some carpet and trimming the lower section of your doors, you wont even notice the speaker sitting out then..without buying verada door trims youre going to have to stick with 6" unless you make a custom pod

I was going to do this, but i decided the speakers werent sitting out far enough for it to even be noticeable unless you really went looking for the gap.. so ill just be buying some plugs to fill to holes left by the map pockets

i have NO holes in my door trim except for the window winder, door handle and button. So i have to cut a hole, however the area on the door trim where most ppl have speakers is too small for 6.5" so i'm gonna have to do this. It's just that what i have to cut seems a bit awkward and i am gonna peel some vinyl back and fold it under so that it doesnt look dodgey. I dont even need a spacer as i am gonna attach the cover to the trim and speaker to the frame so they are completely unrelated.

The other thing is whether a tweater would fit up near the pointy part of the flat area where the handle sits.

edit: i'm a bit of a perfectionist so i wouldnt be able to live with a gap. But at least i know that it's done properly.lol

Isn't the rada door trims only 5 1/2 inch speakers anyway?

D@ve

probably. It would help to know where the centre is though. I havent even located the exact position where the speaker cover sits on the trim. I'm not even completely sure how.

then youre going to need to take your door trim off and have a look really

the tweeter probably wont fit up near the winder, youd be better of mounting it in your kick panels

i took it off and looked, but it is doubtful when it comes to marking it as i cant sit in the frame while the trim is on. The other way is to measure from clip to clip to locate centre of the hole etc. Or drill a hole in the trim, around the centre of the hole and just slowly make it bigger until its big enough

6.5's fitted fine in my door trim.

i tihnk i just measured the center of the hole using the clips, and then went to the shed and cut 5 3/4 inch hole around the mark.

Copycat bastard :P j/k lol

I cant remember how I lined the hole up to cut it, I've tried to remember how I did it so many times but I really just can't remember how I did it.

After I did line it up, however, I figured out the centre, hit a nail into it, tied some string to it, measured the radius and tied it to a pencil at the right length. Then I drew the circle and cut it out in pieces (like a pizza) so the circle was more accurate.

Then I just plonked the speakers in, I had no problems with fitting them in. The tweeter was easy as, I just fake mounted it with blue tac on the outer edges, then drilled the hole for the speaker cable through the hole in the base of the mount. Then removed the tac and screwed it on.

Just wish I could remember how I measured where the hole is to go.

I *may* have measured the distance from where the skin glue stuff on the frame is to the centre of the hole in the frame...then measured that distance on the skin. That might've been it.

EDIT: Just make sure you aim your driver's tweeter to the passenger and vice versa. Otherwise you'll get your head cut off with treble.

u could do wat my bro did to my car, hav the tweeters in the dash where the 4" speakers were. its gonna be an empty space once u put in ur 6-6.5" speakers in and then u wont need to worry bout making more holes in ur door and also looks much neater IMO

I think i'll go for killbilly's way as i awnt the tweeter in the door. Ill keep in mind not to aim the tweeter at me.:P Do you have a cover over your speakers at all? This is my problem, the speaker fits in the hole, and i can cout the hole where the speaker is, but the cover goes into the lump in the skin

Killbilly

Nah I left the covers off as I thought they looked crap lol

i also got an option with mine for them to be flush mounted, so ill try and do that, KB's doors are basically what i want do aswell, except not have the red/yellow color clash (some sony xplods would of suited that door trim nicely;):P)
if its as easy as KB has described im sure i could have a go at it aswell, although i was going to make a small baffle, then cut it on an angle so there.............on an angle lol

but yeah, im not gonna mount my tweets until i find a position they sound nice in, weather that be door, dash or somewhere else.

I dunno about you dave, but if my 6" speakers didn't have covers, they'd be getting kicked an aweful lot.

D@ve, how about just buying some pods? I think Autobarn may have some and they will look the part without you having to mangle your door and trim. The tweeters can be mounted next to the midbass and you'll get great front staging. Just a suggestion.

i thought about that, thanks for the suggestion, but i'm king of stuck on the idea on having it set out seperate, its probably not the best idea but i just cant change my mind.
I thought about it some more and came up with this.
I can screw the woofer into the frame and screw the cover into the trim, if the holes dont line up, i'll make a bracket. Just one thing though. Do i need a spacer, the speaker is a couple mm's away from the window, and with a bracket it would be closer to 10mm.
The other option is to make a spacer so the speaker sits out of the trim over a lip or just behind it, i then attach the cover so that the screw goes through in order

1) cover-trim-speaker-spacer (and bracket if i need one)-frame

or

2) cover-speaker-spacer (and bracket if i need one)-frame

i'm not worried about the tweeters at all as i already know how to do this.....i think  lol

You can buy MDF spacers at JB Hi-Fi that push them out a little. I like the POD idea though.. Each to their own.

There might be something here to help you http://www.aerprohifi.com/list.php Autobarn are the distributors for AeroPro HiFi's products.

with my 6.5's i had to cut into the bit above the trim slightly. you dont notice it because the speaker grill sits flush and a little bit recessed into the door panel shape. I would definately recommend grills, i have a big dent in the middle of my grill from kicking it on the way out. Also, i put my tweeters in the factory spot, they sound great up there, even with the window in the way.

The pod idea is good..thats what I want to do later on. What I did initially was going to be a temporary fitting, oh well lol
