Has anyone got some photos of 1st Gen audio installs?

I haven't been able to find much info. on audio installs in first generation magnas (maybe lookin in da wrong spots), in particular progress pictures and inovations.

If anyone has a link or wants to show off thier 1st Gen stuff then by all means post it here!!!

I'm going to refurbish a 1st gen magna for a mate, and if ppl are interested I'll post up some progress pics at the same time... One thing we are going to try to do is create a decent car audio system, without breaking the bank.

So I guess the main theme of this thread is to get ppl to post up budget installs that they have done, and some good ideas that ppl have had to make the most of what they have around..

This is one I did a few months ago. Please excuse my ignorance but is this a 1st Gen?

So far....

We managed to find a second hand Alpine cd player (about 15 yrs old) for $50 at our local car audio shop. It needed a clean out, so we pulled the top panel off and cleaned the lens with a cotton bud and a bit of metholated spirits.

I used our car battery charger to flash up the head unit and made sure it read burnt cds as well as the radio...

I wanted to get some decent sound into the doors to replace the dash mounted speakers that were stuffed. I found that a pair of 6x9s would fit with a bit of thinking, and these were perfect for providing a good comprimise, as they were cheap, loud straight off the head unit (due to their exellent efficiency), and were better sounding than most of the other speakers we could find at that price. So today we will be installing a head unit and a pair of Kenwood speakers second hand (worth around $40).

Wish us luck............

Yep!!! that's the one... Perfect! I'm eager to see what's lurking underneath those trim panels... I'll find out today..

And I do warn ppl.... You have yet to see an interior as bad as the one inside this magna we are doing up....

Some of the following images you will see may be disturbing...

You may need to use pod's or simple mdf spacers if you want to mount your speakers down low in that nice straight strip at the bottom of the trim. Behind the trim you will find large areas of metal, and small access holes through the metal that may not be big enough for the magnet of the speaker to fit through.

I recently installed a pair of Focal 165 CV Polyglass' into the doors of my TP. They needed a mounting depth of about 8cm, so I made up some pod looking spacers out of 3 rings of mdf. They still needed another further 3cm of space into the doors, so I had to angle grind through the metal so that I could fit the magnet through :)

I will take a photo of the finished product when I get around to it.

yeah i didnt want to resort to that because of weakening the structure of a door incase of a side impact.

Yea I know, but its the only choice we've got. :bowrofl: It was the only position I could find in which the speakers would look good in the trim, and would have the least amount of obstacles in their way.

Although, I doubt there would be any significant risk to the strength of the door structure, as I only had to cut small circles for the magnets, and the surrounding metal is fairly thick.

(My speakers were placed about 4 inches back from the one included in FHRX's pic)
(Pics late tomorrow night if I get around to it lol)

http://www.carstereo.com/installs/photo_gallery_album.cfm?home=yes&photoid=18460&galleryid=1373 Make up some custom door pods like these from some 16mm MDF and get some carpet from an upholsterer and cover it over. Also you will see an obscurely mounted Amp... this is because I had no more room in the boot without it looking out of place. It's for sale btw - 2850ono if anyone's interested

WOW!! Those coax Focals look good in there.... Hmmmm.....

I reckon I might put these covers I got lying around to good use....

Right after I clean up the mess in the dash..

Putting the head unit in was a B!TC#!!!! Usually you can pull 2 access panels off, undo the screws holding the H.U. in and pull it out the front, but because the facia is soooo old I think it may have shrunk and we couldn't get the H.U. through. We had to pull half the dash apart to get her in there!!!

I'm going to make up a 6x9 housing that offsets the speakers enough to fit into the doors without a massive hole being needed. If I can manage it, I'll try to keep the existing door carpet intact underneath so you can remove the pods without leaving a unsightly hole...

WOOOOOT!!!!

I've managed to get a set of 6x9's in each door without the need to cut metal! I've also made sure that the pod can be removed and the door trim will be back to original condition.

But they do stick out a lil bit.....

Excellent job on the install!

I like the idea of you being able to remove them without revealing any hideous holes in the trims or doors, unlike my install :bowrofl:

In regards to you being forced to remove half the dash to get to your headunit, I had to do the same when I was doing mine. I share your pain lol

Yeah... It was a tart!!! I'm just about to drill some pilot holes for the speaker wire to route thru into the cabin, so I guess I'm going to have to muck around with a bit of metal cutting anyway.. The holes will only be quite small (6mm) and I've got a suitable set of grommets to finnish it off nicely!! The biggest drama is how to get enough access for the drill...:doubt:

 That looks incredible!!! I cannot wait till they are finnished!!! They look like they would have taken a fair while to make up. What speakers r going in there?
