Hey fellas,
Was wondering if there's any difference (mechanically speaking) between the semi-auto and fully auto?
Isn't the SA just the same as a normal auto but without the 'L, 2, 3 , 4' gears?

Semi Auto is a 5spd
Semi Auto is a 5spd
erm i thought the new tl standard auto was still a tiptronic semi 4 speed

There are both 5 and 4 speed tiptronics. Sort of, it has PDN and R with the option for + and - gears. Don't know if the logic for upshifting or down shifting is the same. The 5 speed I think also shares the same ratios with the manual.

I have a 4 speed SA..
A SA and an A are completely different inside...

Up to the TH, the sports were 4 spd Tip shift.. then the series 2 TJ had it across the range in 5 speed I think...
TH Sports was the first aussie built car to have tip shift.. at that time, it was one of the best around but was let down by the INVECS-II and slow shifting.

in a normal Autol, when you shift into 2, 3, L, etc... there is a mechanical link that goes into the engine bay somewhere...
but in a Semi-Auto, there's not link... it sounds like there are microswitches or something when tapped up or down....
... does that mean that gear changes are done electronically?

sounds right that they are electronically changed.....
IF SO .... then could it be possiable to program a computer to ...
sit on the rev limiter..... then drop it in 1st... then once the revs get to a pre-determind level... change into 2nd ... and then 3rd... etc...
All you have to do is click on the start program button and have your foot on the brake and the gas... once you release the brake it starts the program and away you go :D

5 gears with a clutch peddel, the only way to drive :D

yeah, that sounds very possible!!! easy even!!! bit costly though to get the right bits... (i love being an electrical engineer)
I might look into a little custom controller for that and if people are willing to pay for the cost.... possibilities, endless!!
hang on.... wouldn't there be a WOT map for the auto's anyway, which would do the same thing?????
and just to correct a typo by magnaV6sports... there were no tip shift autos in Aussie magna's until the TH!!

Heh heh, i have a little black box at work that will do this, we use it for diagnosing auto probs as it completly bypasses the computer by plugging into the harnness at the box. The box is just a simple setup of switches to drive various duty solenoids, it takes a bit of getting used trying to drive the shift by flicking the switches here and there. Because the Tcu is bypassed there is no control of line presure therefore the shift nearly snaps your neck as there is full pressure applied to the clutches when changing. We quite often get 2nd and 3rd gear "chirpies" because of this.
There is very little difference internally between the "Auto and semi auto"
it really just boils down to a revised software and a cople af extra inputs to the TCU for the three microswitches on the shifter. The difference between the 4 and 5 spd is an extra shaft, band and a couple of extra plates/discs in the clutch packs.
