How often does the timing chain need to be replaced on a Galant gsr (1991 model) 2L 5 speed and any ideas on how much to do the job?

Just as an FYI, your car has a belt and not a chain.
Most need replacing around 100,000Km. I am not too sure about your car but guess it would be pretty close.
