View Full Version : mounting problems and other stuff..
This seems like a good place to post this question as it says "Sound System Questions"
I bought the 6.5" cadence splits from greg (ralliart410) and i am think about how to install them, i was think seperately, tweeter around the height of the door handle and woofer where the hole in the door is (for most people, mine isnt there so i gotta make one).
After reading this i am thinking of installing them closer.
Greg recommend i get a POD but i have even less experience in installing a POD for the speaker then just putting it straight in the door.
i was thinking of installing the crossover in the doors, or should i put it under the dash.
i have no car audio at the moment, before installation, except one 4" stock speaker and a pioneer head unit. I bought the 6.5" from ralliart410 and i recieved 6x9" stock speakers as a donation from chantra (by the way im looking to help someone chantra). I am gonna disconnect the 4" and run the 6.5" as the front temporarily until i get an amp and do more rewiring. I dont have a steady income so its a bit unknown when im getting money.
I just wanna know whether i should buy an amp next or buy the wire first as i probably cant afford them both at the same time. I am thinking, if possible a 7 way speaker set up. 2 in the parshel shelf, a sub, 2 in the back doors, 2 in the front. This is i big project that will takes some time as its not cheap. Any ideas? By the way i like front staging but i think i want more.

The best spot for your mids and tweeter would be in the kick panel in its own custom pod, but this is exxy and impractical usually so the doors will have to do for the mids.
With the mids in the doors, you want to have the tweets reasonably close to the mids, usually within a handspan. This avoids separation.
With 2 way setups this is very important. Reason being: Many vocals spread across the 2-3khz region. This is also where most 2 way setups have their crossover point. So the mids and the tweeter both play these frequencies.
At this frequency you want to ensure that the vocals are in one point. If they are spread across two distinct points (door and dash) the image will get blurred.
So in regards to imaging this is one major reason why this is important. Also to do with path length difference as I discussed in the other thread.
Crossover: Can go anywhere between the amp thats powering (headunit or external amp) and the speakers. I mount mine at the amps as it makes it easier to upgrade, and fiddle with. But if you want them out of the way and opt with the doors, make sure they are waterproof as your doors will fill with water. You dont want your crossover getting wet. wrap them in a plastic bag if need be.
With the 7 way speaker setup it is very tempting to throw little bits of money at your system at a time, upgrading the fronts, then rears then rear doors. But more speakers dont necessarily equate to a better sound if you are after SQ. If you want a system that looks cool, or gets loud then maybe it will do. But if you want one that sounds good a hundred crap speakers wont sound better than one good pair of splits and some decent power and a clean signal.
I would do it one step at a time. You've got your fronts sorted. Spend some money getting them installed well. Maybe put a bit of money into door prep to get a good position for your mids and tweeters. Also install your free rears off the headunit.
in time look to an amp for the fronts. Perhaps go a four channel and power the lot. Then after that look to add a sub onto the 4 channel with channel 3+4 bridged.
This way you can save up and do it right. You will end up with a much better system, instead of a whole lot of crap gear that you will end up upgrading in the end.
Peace
Tim
thanks for the reply tim
just so you know i wasnt planning on throwing little bits of money here and there. Im looking for an identical set of cadence 6.5" splits further down the track. Maybe eventually a beast master sub, keeping it cadence. dont know about what 6x9 to upgrade to and amps or head unit.
I think this may take a whole year to save up for the components and maybe longer to have it all installed, this is just going by the way life is going for me at the moment. by the way i think i am going to moun the crossover components in the dash some where temporary until i get an amp etc.. and make up some enclosures.
note* im installing everything myself, im just worried about installing the speakers for the back doors as i dont know how much space i got to play with, i havent really looked cos i dont have those speakers yet.

haha a year... i dont plan on being 'finished' for a few years yet ;)
this is just a starter. I eventually want a touch screen with dvd player in the dash and gps option in it connected to a laptop in the boot etc..I dont wat tv screens or anything like that all through my car and i want a good sound system but i want my boot to almost look stock.
Note: I am colour coding everything orange and black, or rather i'm thinking of doing this so i am actually thinking of taking the vinyl off my door trims and making custom mouldings and extras my self which will then be covered in orange and black vinyl (or other material).
Any opinion on cadence 6x9 or amps (i dont remember seeing 6x9 cadence when i was on their website, i'll take a look later tonight)

i thought cadence are good quality speakers and i like orange and black, if the jbl are better then well i'll take them. I dont care about price as i am not going to upgrade later, its a waste of money in my opinion. Infact i dont think i'll get rid of my car ever unless i absolutely have to. I like the body shape on the 2nd gens and after i get my degree in sutomotive engineering i'm looking in doing some MAJOR conversions to it to change it to a rear wheel drive, change the transmission to a 6 speed and maybe even put in a small v8, MAJOR work, expensive too but never the less its what i want, and before anyone replies i know the cost, etc... and i have accounted for getting past regency.
But back on topic in opinion on good quality 6x9's anyone, i'll keep the JBL in mind, if posible can you put the specs on the spec you recommend and maybe even what you paid for it, or what they cost.
Thanks
Dave

Looks like it'll be a really interesting project.
Anyway, with the sound system, mine has been in the works for 18 months and I'm far from being done. I've taken it slow, waited for the good deals, and trying to learn what I can as well as doing as much of it myself as possible rather than paying some dude to rip through my dash. Yeah, I got a few spare screws I'm not sure where to put, but it's much more fun doing it yourself. Just take your time, you'll still be happy in the end. No point rushing. Make the right choice the first time and you'll probably never need to upgrade.
i got a second trim, but only for the passenger door. I might also try re upolestry (sp) on the door trim. :D
i'll post up pics of everything i do, but i only have a phone cam which is kinda dodgy.
i have a question but first i'd like to just say that i personally dont like pods for speakers, they look weird in my opinion.
Heres the question, how do should the speakers be mounted (similar to the first question but slightly different).
i am looking at the doors for my speakers but i am not sure how people normally mount the door speakers as i have never taken the doors off of cars which had door speakers. are the grilles mounted seperate to the speakers, so that the grilles are only attached to the door trim and the speaker is only attached to the frame via a spacer/bracket.

Most cars with spaces for speakers will let you mount them without the speaker grilles, just behind the stock trims
If you want to use the speaker grilles, it goes
door trim -> speaker grille mount -> speaker -> speaker grille.

If you want to use the speaker grilles, it goes
door trim -> speaker grille mount -> speaker -> speaker grille.will the weight of the speakers affect the trim if i do it that way, or sound quality from vibrations as i havent bought sound deadening yet (next on my list)
edit* i only ask because my dad thinks it is too heavy, and i have no idea. (well actually i have a feeling its not too heavy, i have started to make a hole in a door trim to fit the speaker grille, any idea on what to use to peel the vinyl back so i can fold it under so it doesnt look tacky.
How are stock speakers mounted
door trim -> speaker grille mount -> speaker -> speaker grille
or seperately. i wish mine came stock with speakers there

Depends how tough ur trims are. In terms of quality, u would be better off mounting them straight into the door if possible, possibly on a mdf mount as well.
thats what my dad thinks and i agree, its just hard to locate the exact place to cut the hole for the speaker as i cant see through the trim, i have drilled a hole in the trim its over the hole in the door frame but not centred, i think if i make it big enough for me to fit my hand in i can draw the hole size on the back of the trim.
not such a preferable way so i am hesitant to do it. Thanks for the input, where abouts should i put the cross over, i was thinking in the door but i think its better in the car, would under the seat be good or should i put it under the dash (my dash is starting to become filled with wires and little modules because i installed an alarm (almost done, finally got back around to doing it after 4 months lol ) and central locking so i was thinking of putting it somewhere else. any ideas, an accessable place which isnt visible and not cluttered would be preferable. Even if you dont know the car aswell as your own, around what area do you think would be good.
note* i am not afraid of ripping my door, dash, seats apart as i have done all of these a dozen times to fix some little problems. By the way right now the speaker fits straight in the speaker hole but the holes dont line up and it just touches the window so i think if i make a spacer that is about 5-10mm or slightly bigger spacer/bracket out of mdf to fit the speaker in i should be fine.
The other thing is whether or not i should cover the speaker at the back, i think it is made to be open at the back but i want to protect it from water. Any ideas once again?
edit* tim i get freaked out everytime i see that stewie rubbing his crutch   lol

its ok to admit you like it :p
I like to mount my crossovers in the boot. Then you can show them off with your amps and they dont get in the way. Just means two extra runs of wires, but it makes for easy fiddling.
The spacer will be fine for the speaker (ideal in fact)
Peace
Tim
