I need some clear information re Magna gearboxes, particularly the manual 5 speed's:
How common are the manual cars
How well do the handle the added power of modified engines?
Are there any known problems with them?
did the ralliart magna's have and differences?
what ratio's and final drives are availble?
What diff options LSD/Torsen etc are available?
Does the engine match up to the 6spd in the new eclipse?
Are there any other driveline issues with magna's?

For general information, the magna/380 driveline is one of 3 powertrains being considered for the Godiva DIY car in Race Magazine.

> How common are the manual cars

Uncommon but not rare. You'll probably find more manuals in the VR-X/Sports end of the market than the Exec. There are no factory manual Veradas.

> How well do the handle the added power of modified engines?

Well. Booya's 300kW ATW turbo 3L was using a standard box. He eventually destroyed some gears but the box was 150,000km old when he started. Mitsiman's 11sec twin turbo car is still running its original gear box.

> Are there any known problems with them?

Not really. A little notchy shifting sometimes.

> did the ralliart magna's have and differences?

Manual Ralliart had an LSD, otherwise the same driveline.

> what ratio's and final drives are availble?

I forget...

> What diff options LSD/Torsen etc are available?

Ralliart factory LSD, Cusco also make an LSD that'll fit.

> Does the engine match up to the 6spd in the new eclipse?

No idea

> Are there any other driveline issues with magna's?

The clutch will start to slip when you run more than 150-160kW ATW through it - but that's 33% more power so you can't complain. There are heavier clutches available so it's no biggy.

Had to add, there were some KR's

You should come visit South Australia. The last 'Friday night' event that was held at Jerks there were about 7 Magnas (TE-TJ) all 5 speeds.

thanks for that information.
The clutch will not present a problem, anything can get made up.
Is the FW a cast iron or steel unit?
I notice the DOHC engines in some avatars. Any real performance advantage and how much extra space?
Any block flex issues with the engine and forced induction?
I have approached Sprintex re their kit, but did not find them very helpful. Is anyone on this forum running one?

the DOHC engines are the older design (swapped Left-right), but also very similar to those in the 3000GT (or GTO) so i'm guessing the gearboxes arent weak either. if you can find a 3000GT engine, these are already twin turbo. put a 2nd gen magna gearbox behind it, stick it in the back and you have: twin turbo, mid-engined, V6, RWD... lovely combination

i'm pretty sure Booya's was running standard internals for a while, and still making a heap of power, even the internal work done to Mitsiman's 11 sec TJ is reasonably common for converting a N/A car to twin turbo.

there are a few running the sprintex kit, but i think boost is limited (to about 220-240kW) and there is no interecooler option.

thanks for the information. When I spoke to Sprintex at the melb motorshow, they were talking of a water/air intercooler. When pressed they agreed that the laminova system was being developed. They have not yet produced such a system?
The problem with the 3000gt engine is that it will not meet adr's for emissions...and it is pretty expensive.
