Hey guys.

Just curious to know how safe it is to use the 1-2-3 gears on the auto box.

i have a manual licence with an auto TJ...and i enjoy the manual gears alot more then leaving it in D.

Is there any reprocussions from doing this?...or long term effects?

thanks.

Shifting manually (which has been covered sooo many times) is fine. It's when you downshift to 1st when you should be in 3rd which is where the sh!t hits the fan. Going 1-2-3-D wont damage anything, downshifting wont, unless your speed is too high (but you should already know roughly which speeds each gear like).

If you liek the auto but want to drive it a bit harder. here is what id do.

1. Transmission cooler - I think they are (or atleast were) this months special from RPW.
2. go to a transmission specialist, get the primary drive drum machined and a kevlar based drive belt. while he is in there, put another friction plate or 2 between 2nd and 3rd. (or if you have the cash get them all replaced with kevlar ones)
3. contact MV automatics and get one of their "shift boxes" allows a auto to be driven like a manual. ask them for some information.

Trans cooler like $120. If your even shifting it like you are, id seriously look at buying one.

The MV auto shift box costs $400 with change, dunno if its model specific or a universal part tho.

As for the rest, im not a transmission bloke so... ask one of them.

A similar setup to this was put into a Turbo Soarer kicking big power as an alternative to a manual conversion. The box ive described could probably take any punishment that you can issue it in a magna.

For you id recomend installing a cooler ASAP. Investigate the shift kit and get that installed, and get the drum, belt and friction plates done at your leisure (or when the gearbox starts to die in the ass, whichever comes first)

im gettin a tranny cooler installed in my TH during the next trans service which is in 2 months. but was talking to a bloke from transtyle autos in melbourne and he told me magna boxes are pretty strong and can be pushed a lil.

i drive mine manually every now and then and when gearing down i kinda listen to the car (if u know wat i mean) coz u can tell if u gera down to quickly. when cummin to the lights i drop mine to 3rd at bout 60-65ks the 2nd at bout 25-30ks and let the car go to first itself. and it does sound awsome :D especially with an exhaust. choonga revs the tits out of his auto box and he hasnt had ne problems..... yet lol
