well that tint is illegal in all states of australia, so if ur in an accident where the tint may have been a factor they will not pay up at all

You MUST tell them. Just tell them that the windows are tinted and they should at it to the policy.. See your policy a section called duty of disclosure..

I had mine tinted in 15% about 2mths ago, got picked up by the boys in blue and was fined! Rang my insurance company (AAMI) they said that my Insurance will be void because it was not a legal tint. Anyways after the fine I had my mate pull it all off and put the legal stuff on. Happen to my Bro's mate last week, was in a crash now his Insurance company is using his tints as an excuse not to pay up for both him and the other dude....

I can't tell whether my car's tinted or not. does anyone knows if my magna come with factory tinting?

Sometimes my windows look dark, other times there doesn't seem to be anything there at all?

if there's no factory tinitng or UV protection, i'll consider putting some tints on as i seem to be getting much darker around the paws and very white everywhere else.

.... & furthermore the tinting will stop the glass shattering and flying thru the air, & cutting while you crawl out or getting in your eyes resulting in a lower hospital bill which will surely work for the insurance people. lol

$150 fine for an illegal vehicle modification. Had a big mess to get my insurance re-instated too... My mate is a window tinter, he stripped off the illegal stuff from my car and applied the most expensive 35% legal for a few bottles of alcohol. I think it will be more, as he will be forever reminding me when we are out partying!

I had mine tinted in 15% about 2mths ago I thought tint over 30% was illegal, not 15% ????

Tint under 35% is illegal, except on buses/coach windows. Tint 35% and over is legal

well if its illegal why was the guy like "this is the best one we have" and "its the one i'd suggest" and why do they sell it in the first place

Because they want your money. If look at the product disclaimer statement from the tint
manufacturer. I bet it'll say for off street use like most stuff you add on to cars to make it look
good and sound better etc.

Mitsu cars and most others come out of the factory with tinted windows. Its not a film tint and
does not offer any uv reduction and only minimal say 5% solar reduction. Its a dye which is
added during the making of the windows. Just like the tinted strip at the top of the front
windscreens.

well, dude my own opinion is that if you know your insurance company is not gonna like the fact that you did something to your car, and prefer not to tell them, then whats the point in paying for the insurance at all?????

coz like Mr Bishi said, what if ur in hospital.

if ur not gonna tell them then u may as well save your insurance money, put it in the bank, and use it for the accident should that time come.

next time you get pulled over by cops - roll down windows on your side of the car, as he passes he will see right in and hopefully not see the other side.

there was random breathtesting and my dad was in line, car in front was booked for illegal tinting, my dad just rolled the windows down and they didnt say a thing.

keep that in mind, it COULD work

NSW standards:

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi/vsi03_rev3.pdf

Basically the 35% rule...

Working in insurance all I will say is do not be suprised if an insurance company "enquires" about your tint should you be in prang..... the best idea is to diclose everything as soon as you know something. Better to find out before than after if you'll be covered or not.

Have a look at AAMI's policy for example

http://www.aami.com.au/products/policy/car/pdf/AAMI_6547_CMV_NSW_ACT.pdf

"Am I covered if the car was modified and AAMI is not notified "NO""

That may only work if the coppa was approaching your car from the front to your side window... it doesn't usually happen that way :-)

On that topic, I was curious what about those reflective like mirror type tint, are they illegal as well?

Tinting is very important in conditions like Australia, I wont be able to stand it on normal glass.

Just come back from a cruz out to Dubbo for a couple of days to check out the Western Plains Zoo (very good by the way). However, I am thrilled to report that this experience has convinced my wife that spending 2-3 hundred on tinting is justified. :D

Umm..tinting may look cool but that the only thing it does for you. All these claims that it keeps your car cooler are a joke. Regular glass stops 100% of UV the claim you need tints for it is factually incorrect. As for keeping a car cooler well thats also BS, if you look at independant testing it affects the temperature less than 1% against no tint - in other words 0.4 degrees at 40 degrees. The colour of you car makes far far bigger difference. The panel temperature of a black car can be 15-16 degrees higher than a white one - yellow is good also about 2-3 degrees higher, red about 8 degrees.(I am a research chemist so the above info is based on science not advertising lol)
The other thin is that in dusk /dawn tints can really affect your vision, as the RACV say, best thing is a good pair of sunnies, spend the 200 tinting costs on those and keep safe :)

I'm not sure that I agree with all that you are saying there... What about tint preventing the sun beating in on you through the window as you drive, warming you up slowly but surely... your aircon is not as effective without tint. My personal experience is that it does make a significant difference to driving comfort. Anyone else agree?

I have physical proof that tint does work. Compare my wife's right forearm against mine
and you'll notice her's are much darker and she spends less time outdoors than me. Her
Festiva does not have tinting. You can easily see the benefits on a hot sunny day by
rolling down the window partially and have half your arm exposed. Plus, Glas stops 60%
UV not 100%. And the heat reduction property of tint is due to its darker colours absorbing
IR. IR is what causes heat.

Absolutely agreed with vlad.

Though research says one way. Through my experience even with my windows up I get a TAN! My toys in a glass cabinet turns white to yellow. Block UV? No way! You are better off having tint. Its not just the obvious. Ask any guy to stand under a clear glass roof and a tinted one, and see which one feels cooler. And please dont tell me you can't get a TAN in the car because you can.
