for a 4 cylinder EFI
With timing check connector earthed = 5degrees BTCD plus or minus 0.5
With timing check connector capped = 13degrees BTCD plus or minus 2.0

Hi ommerum to quote the Haynes Manual (crap!), # 1 cyclinder is the cylinder nearest the front of the engine. Now as the gearbox is at the rear of the engine (left side) then the camchain / alternator end is the front of the engine, so the right hand cylinder is #1.
You also need to be able to locate the "spark advance cut" terminal connector so that you can time the motor with a timing light. Just behind the distributor there is a wiring harness that runs from left to right across the rear firewall. About 30cm from the right side of the engine bay there is a short length of cable sticking up from that harness with a 20mm diameter connector that doesn't connect to anything, remove the cap from the connector and you will see a single terminal, jumper this terminal to earth while the motor is idling. You should hear the motor slow down to about 700 rpm, this stops the ECU from dynamically changing the timing dpending on engine requirements. You should be able to adjust the timing now to 5 degrees with a timing light on # 1 cylinder (ie the one on the right).
