Hey guys, i've noticed lately that my oil is coming out of my filler cap when driving, now i'm wondering if this is because the cap is just not making a good seal or could there be a bigger problem at hand? the thing that annoys me most is not only the waste of oil (its only a small amount I think.. it doesn't POUR and i cant see it when it idles..) but the fact that it gets the front of the engine all stuck up with dirt and crap.. could there be too greater vacuum in the tappet cover? I'm hoping just buying a replacement filler cap, like a red simota one (to match my car and make it look pretty ) would do.. but i'm worried it wont be as simple as that or getting maybe a catchcan installed to take some pressure out... ideas?

Sound like it just needs a new 'o' ring to make the seal all nice 'n tight again, just like an 18 yr old vir......umm yeah.

once the car been sitting for a bit unscrew it and take a look at the seal might be twisted or damaged or just dry. if it looks fine wipe sum engine oil on the seal and screw it back on and make sure it's only hand tight or ull find it hard to get off in the future. now run the car if it still happens go to supercheap or most auto stores and buy another one wont be more then say $10, good luck :D

Either the cap seal is worn (buy a new seal), and/or the PCV valve is blocked.

if the seal has not gone hard, and your to cheap to buy a new one, just take the seal off and turn it over then apply a samll film of oil (like with a oil filter) when you put it back on

Where do i find the PCV valve tek?? I rekon this might be it because the whole point is to create vacuum right, so by blowing oil out...the PCV valve must be blocked otherwise the loose oil filler cap would just be sucking air in if the seal was gone... having positive pressure there would just make the oil run away from the cam gear huh?

Well the cap still screws on tight, locks on tight, whatever you want to call it... does anyone know if the filler caps from the 3L and 3.5L are the same??

thanks for the input guys :bouncin:

by the way, how am i going to check if the PCV valve is working correctly??

I have one of those ebay aftermarket "Ralliart" (lol) caps - didn't leak at first - but is now.

PCV Valve on my car is locted here..

now to clean it in sure you take it out and soak it in some metho until the ball or metal thing inside starts to shake again....there is definatly something on this site about it, do a quick search..

All you have to do to check a pcv valve is to take it out and shake it, if it rattles it good. Or just be safe and buy a new one, they're only about 10 bucks.

As for the oil cap, on these motors they're renowned to go bad after about 10 years. Just buy a new one of them too. I had the exact same problem in my diamante, new cap and now no more oil leakage.

TUFFTR,
Thanks for the photo - showing us (non-mechs) where to look for it.

$165  Wow - some places think we are either stoopid or made of $$$. :bowrofl:

Try ebay for around $35 (+postage).
*edit* Just found one on ebay for $25...

When I bought mine, the Aussie ebay site didn't have them. I bought one for my Magna and one for the Tarago from the US ebay site at around US$5 (+postage). This worked out slower but cheaper. But now they are available on the Aussie ebay site, I'd just buy them from there - much easier.

Replacement PCV Valve or replacement oil cap?
...and if PCV Valve - do you mean the oil leak around the oil cap has gone?

Hello Nick,

Common problem with DSM motors. Jusy buy a new cap and your problems will be solved.

Yeah i meant an oil cap.. the pcv should rattle when shaken as per someone elses instructions. Put the new oil cap on, which was a bloody struggle trying not to burn myself on a hot engine but it went on eventually. Oil has stopped leaking.. (obviously)
