I dunno if this might have been covered before, but I have a problem where my car keeps stalling when trying to drop into idle.

I have a 97 TF Exec, 3.0L V6 Manual. If I'm running the A/C, it idles fine when I come to a top at lights etc, but if the A/C isn't on, it drops very low, struggles to regain and most often just stalls. Yesterday I disconnected the battery to do some work on the car, and I was thinking maybe it is just the ECU having to readjust to setting the idle or something like that, because no problems beforehand, and it did struggle for a few days after I had my alternator probs a week or two ago (and d/c the battery for that).

It's getting to be a pain the the rectum, just wondering if anyone knows if it will just correct itself again or whether I should take it in to be looked at?

Adjust the idle and see what happens...

As FiveFourV8 said, check the idle first. If it continues after that, then chances are its the Idle Speed Control (ISC) motor. Most mechanics should be able to diagnose it, with a little bit of effort. If you're brave, however, then you can get a Gregory's / Haines manual and check it yourself.

I'm gonna get the rear bank of plugs replaced (overdue) and a tune first. Mech friend reckons I should do that to see if it just fixes itself. If not, then get the idle checked.

im not an expert but usually if it is the isc problem it should struggle wen a/c is on but u hav the other way round try ur maf sensor it could be faulty or leaking. :doubt:

Nah, it's fixed itself. I think it was just that the ECU reset to factory settings, and cos my car needs new sparks and a tune it wasn't running as factory. So the ECU had to learn the right handling for the engine's condition (at least that's what a mitsi's engineer told me)

As for the A/C, I would say that when you have it on, the ECU would set fuel for idle higher, seeing as it predicts a heavier load on the engine, so it was able to keep it running.

All working now though, so it's less annoying. Once I get the plugs done and have it tuned, all should be sweet :D

Ahh the joys of a second hand car!
