View Full Version : Err....have i f**ked my trim?

well after waking up at 3pm today i decided to make use of my crappy life by doing something constrcutive.
i took the door trim off and did a quick measurement......i realy had no idea on how to make sure the hole i made would line up with hole in the door....please, i know, it was stupid....
now....
how do i go about this? i mean the hole i made fits the speaker perfectly, even goes into the door fine...but how i exactly mount this?
Is there a piece of round MDF that goes between the metal in the door and the door trim? like for it to rest against?
or is the circular piece of MDF only on the outside of the door trim?
Or Both?
for the outside of the door trim, the piece of MDF will most Likely Fill in the whole of the bottom
Im Just wondering where i go from now to make these things fit, i wont be connecting them, just fitting them, so when i install the amps etc, i just hook em up and away i go.
i will clean both doors tonight so tomorrow i can get stuck into sound deadning them.
here are the pics of what ive done
This Is The Clean Door Ready For SDing (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/dodgeviper89/frontspeakers008.jpg)
This Is My err.....Screwed Door Trim (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/dodgeviper89/frontspeakers001.jpg)
*note, i drew on the trim AFTER i lined up my hole and realised what i have done, as you can see i have got about an inch of room on the other side
here is a picture of how i want my doors to look (pic courtesy of Nsitu)....im presuming these are covered in vynal....but yeah if anyone can give me a few pointeres on how to fix what ive done that'd be awesome, i'll be on here for about anouther hour before i go peeling off all the crap of my drivers side door...
if anyone has any questions please feel free to ask
Cheers, Paul
outch man, thats gotta suck, hey i might hav sum spare door trims wen im done with my power windows installation, if u want i might be able to send ya a set wen im done with the install
omfg your doing exactly what i am, how did you do it, i cant even get close to lining it up.
by the way i bought an extra trim to practice on from a wrecker for $11
I have drilled a hole but i am peeling the vinyl back and not cutting it that way i can see how much i can cut so it doesnt looked f***ed.
by the way i have 2 left hand front door trims as 1 was the 1 i got from the wreckers....too bad your in a different state (i think you know my situation when it comes to postage). But you should be able to get your self down to a wrecker to pick up a trim.

(by the way i told you you should have waited for me to do it first :bowrofl: :bowrofl: )

I just mounted mine straight into the trim, does alright.
why dont u pick a point to measure from.....example centre of the window winder
and measure down and across to the centre of the speaker hole on the door......then transfrer that onto your door trim, that way u have the centre point and u just cut the hole out........

D@ve - use a jigsaw mate, makess easssssyyyyy work of the vynal LOL your peeling it back!
TR-Envy, i was thinking of putting them straight onto the trim, not into the metal, but i dunno, im thinking it might just vibrate like crazy or something? i know it seems very stiff but with a constantly vibrating speaker there i dont know if it would hold properly or anything...
Ahh
samurai - .................god damn it, good idea............
would any of you know by any chance if i can still mount these properly to the door?

samurai your idea is exatcly what i tried, but it didnt work out well. the hole ended up about 3cm off where it should have been.
Mount the speaker and grill seperate. So the grill is attached to the trim and the speaker to the frame. This way the door trim is still easy to remove (not increasing the hassle by having to remove the speaker every time) and the speaker is firm in the frame. Make a spacer that is about 5-15mm thick i think so the speaker is off the window, close to the grill, make it out of mdf
[TUFFTR]
28-01-2006, 05:07 PM
ahh yes i get what your saying, problem is
with the clarions, the grille of the speaker just slides over some grooves mounted where the holes are. so my only options are
metal frame - MDF - door trim - speaker - grille
i get what your saying though i just couldnt piece anything together before, i was to busy worrying about if i had fu**ed anything up...
this still might be able to work.... only problem is now i have to make the identical mistake on the other side!!
forgot to mention i am peeling it back so i can fold it around the edge of the hole so i dont see vinyl edges etc....By the way i dont c exactly what u mean by screwed, u have the hole, why do u have holes away from the speaker hole, and doesnt the speaker cover the edges of the vinyl in the hole. Do you have the door inserts, that would explain the hols and why you think its screwed, kinda. I dont understand what you mean by ****ed up
got pics of the grill, i dont understand

as you can see it clips in right around the very edges of the speaker.
i was just worryed becuase it looked like i took to much of a chuck out of one side, as you can see by the first pic.
would i still be safe if i mounted 15-18mm MDF behind it....screwed that to the frame
then screw the speaker through the trim into the MDF?
i think i might be alright now....i just wanted to confirm my suspicions...

I'm no expert and I don't know what the doors are like on a 2nd gen, but that sounds like a good idea to me.

if you refer to the 2nd pic in my 1st post, there is a good 20mm between trim and door, anyway, im back outside to prepare the other door, tomorrow i get my SD:D

do you mean so that the trim is connected to the frame by screws.
like this:
frame=>spacer=>trim=>speaker=>grill
is that what your thinking. to find out how thick the spacer should be, grab a piece of carboard, big enough to cover the hole in the frame and put the trim on the door, use a tape measure, vernier caliper, or ruler to measure the depth, make sure you allow for the width of the cardboard.
Does this help at all

yeah basically what you said there, but im going to use another piece of MDF (only thin) on top of the trim, and paint/cover that, so i hide those nasty screw holes left by the map pockets.
i think i might be safe.
i just hope i can get a few small pieces of MDF tomorrow.....hope bunings might have a few offcuts i can have :shifty:
thanks for the tips peoples
r u getting door inserts thingies so you have it like in that pic, i want to but i cant find any (decent ones) from you pull it an i am heading to another wrecker, when i get some money.

I cant hear my door trims rattling at all. Putting the MDF behind it will obviously be better for it though.
i just thought i might just explain what i am gonna do
frame=>MDF spacer=>speaker
and seperately
trim=>speaker grill
this seems to be the best option, pity that your grill doesnt have screw holes like the ones you'd need to do my idea.
The other thing is i think it might be good to put a cover or something over the back of the speaker in the door to protect from weather. Just a suggestion

28-01-2006, 07:06 PM
ok well i just checked what i have to do and i THINK i should be safe.
tomorrow im going to see if bunnings have some 20cmx20cm 15MM MDF.....its exactly 15mm from the frame to the trim, then all i gotts do ic cut a hole in it, and screw it to the frame of the car, simple.
then im going to make a "cover" like the one nsitu has, out of 3mm MDF, this will then be covered in vynal and glued/stapled to the trim......then its a simple case of putting the speaker in!!!
did that make any sense?
i hope it did!
and im going to flush mount the tweeter about 2 inchs away from the door handle lever thingy.
should look good, im gonna have the vynal in either a suitable moroon color, or, white vynal which i will then spray myself....
then i have to get the speaker wires through the grommets and trail them to the boot.....god....all for 2 speakers  !
ill keep you all updated obvioulsy....
thanks for the input....BUT if you got more suggestions please feel free :D

not sure if someone has already suggested this as i did'nt read all the posts but what i do at work when i'm installing speakers to a door i have'nt done before is get a big piece of cardboard and make a template of the doortrim ... only has to be the front half then cut the hole in it where the speaker would go and make sure it all lines up ... then when i'm happy with it lay it over the top of the original door card and draw the hole ... then cut it out ... done it heaps of times and never made a mistake yet
hope you can understand my typing

this is what i did aswell, but i didnt have a big enough piece of cardboard so it slipped about 3mm down. o well, thats why i just drilled a small hole.

All's good now....
if i can get my hands on some 15mm MDF tomorrow i can at least mount them.
the 15mm MDF will go between the metal frame and the trim, so the speaker has something solid behind it, not just screwed into the trim alone.
looks like my trim wasnt f**ked, but that i just rushed it and was bit to eager and i have survived by the smallest margains...
note to self - plan things out next time *d'oh*
these will look sweet when in:D

if all else fails, buy a bigger speaker grille (ala jaycar with pretty led's under it) Try and get one for a 8" woofer or bigger, Mount the speaker in the door with lots of mdf around it paint the mdf black and mount the new grille onto the trim. And cut the excess out of the middle

well i just went out and bought 3 rolls of jaycar SD, few ring terminals, 2 angled jaycar ports, 4L of brush on sound deadner, and 1M of moroon vynal.
now now im going to start preparing the doors etc, it should look really sweet when its done, well, anyway im off to work!
it should look like nsitu's.....just moroon :D
*EDIT
YER!!! 3000 posts!!....i'd like to thank AMC...my internet connection...and the mods for not perma banning me :D................lol
good luck mate, make sure you double, triple check that the vinyl is cut right, fits perfectly before you even start to stick it down.

well ive just sound deadened 1 door trim, the inner door, the window winder handle and a few metal bits, im starting the 2nd door now.
QUESTION!
is the only place i can put the wire through the door the grommet? it looks like its gonna be REAL hard to get a wire through there, seeing as it goes in an S shape?
Any 2nd gen owners care to tell me where to put the wire? and if i have to remove bits of dash etc?
oh yes and is it ok if i stick together 5 x 3mm MDF to make 15mm? i cant get my hands on any so would that do?
Cheers!
it isnt that hard to feed the wires through the grommet, use a thick piece of wire (like coat hanger wire) and feed that through first and just attach the wires to the end of the coat hanger wire and pull them all through. You can also unplug the grommet and feed the wires through while its out. any questions just ask as i did this with my central locking installation and i had to go to a wrecker to pick up the rubber pieces as i had caps, no wires to the doors.
i suggest not sticking 5 pieces of mdf together but if thats all you can find, use really strong glue and let it dry really well before cutting the holes for the best/smoothest cuts.

well i found some 5mm MDF so im going to use that x 3
i finihsed Sound Deadning the inside of both doors, both trims, window winders, and little farty things aswell.
that took me just over 4 hours.
i also started the MDF "baffles" for the bottom of the door, they would also be complete if my $15 jigsaw blade didn't snap - you get what you pay for:P
my mum is covering the top inserts in vynal atm.....will look meaty with 2cm of wadding behind it:P
now i bought 4L of this sound deadning stuff....i dont know why.......just said meh for $15 more i get an extra 3L.....
tomorrow ill get some more jigsaw blades and finish the bottom pieces, they can be covered in vynal tomorrow too if i have enough time.
so what i might *attempt* to do is feeding the wire through....basically if i can do that everything will be dead easy.
feed wires through
apply sound deadning mat
connect to speakers
trim on
hopefully it will out out nice and easy :)
here are some pics of how everything looks
p.s. - stimulate, magnat, mitsimonsta, anyone who has SD'd before - if you have any helpful tips or anything i could improve on, that would be tops!
but i did do my reseach and i have read at least 4 seperate tutorials on how to do this so im sure i covered everything..
p.s.s - i "borrowed" your idea of filling the window winder thing with SD tim.....if a CAASQ champ can do it, so can i!

did you paint sound deadening on the bracket on the frame where the trim screws on. The thing above the window winder (its actually called a regulator in the manual i think). Just curious, and if you did what about the other one.

i have only done what is visible on the photos....
if thats the part your talking about
take off door trim, and do as much as you can with wax and grease remover (1L septone from super cheap about $10)
the just grab a brush and paint the sh*t on....
you can get 1L body deadner from supercheap (septone) for about $16
i got the 4L which was about $36
then for the outside i got the 3 kits from jaycar, which should do both doors.
ARGH how the f**k do you get the wire into the grommet? i can see the bastard but it wont go in
if your talking about the part between the door and car then try unplug the grommet and pull it straight while feeding the wires through then plug it back in and it should be fine.

ahh, top idea my man!
i was going to go do it like right now, but was gonna use wire and bend it once....

well ill get back to it....sorta dark out there, im doing this in my garage with crap lighting and me with a torch LOL
Cheers!

at least you have a garage i have a little veranda that just covers a bit of the driveway where i finaly got my car (its hard to get the spot with 3 cars in the family). good luck mate, it is really a lot easier once you pull it out. Just remember its a rubber plug which may not wanna come out. Just pull but try not to strain the rubber to hard or i wont go back on (you know when you see the strech marks on rubber how it goes lighter colour, you dont want that)
if your talking about the part between the door and car then try unplug the grommet and pull it straight while feeding the wires through then plug it back in and it should be fine.
gonna be a b*tch to put the grommet bak in again, bro and i had troubles with that wen we were installing his speakers
ur just weak hojo :bowrofl:
nah i not what you mean.......i tried that and i came up with this
all you have to do is put the metal frame in the groove on one side of a plug and force the other side of the plug in, repeat for the other plug
lol well we've gotta go thru the same troubles later wen we (my bro and i) install the power windows in my car.. let the fun begin  ... after camp, and maybe school
im thinkin of doin that to my tr, and i am putting in 6.5" and i already put in central locking so tell me how you go with power windows and post up any pics, might help me up. The grommet gets easier the more often you use them.

ok
one side DONE!
i first pulled out the top grommet and shoved a coat hanger down there.....it got down....but that was it...
then i said hang on, the bottom one!
and yeah pulled both out made it straight and it eventually came through!
i feel like such a pro now
i got 2 wingnuts off the centre trim aswell hojo....i lost one in the process lol
now i found out the other one is on the other side!!
well tomorrow i might get up super early to do some more on it......its funny ive done nothing for the last 2 months of holidays...last 2 days BAM i transform the interior
always left to the last minute....
well im gonna piece back together most of the glovebox now and disassemble the drivers side.....if i can get it done tonight i will be a very very happy (and stinky) chap
cheers for the help d@ve + hojo
lol told ya it would be hard to get to those wing nuts on the center trim :P but all sounds to be in good order mate, keep up the good work ;) gotta check out the progress after the week.. damn skool camps :doubt:

well i know for a fact that to get this installed profesionally would be over $600 (HU, 2 amps, 2 subs, 4 speakers)
when you break it down into little segments like installing 1 pair of speakers at a time it really is quite easy
and being 17 i need to save all the money i can.
i did the 2nd door about an hour ago, after i spent about 15 minutes trying to the wire through the grommet, it finally went through, i jumped up and swore in happyness!
tomorrow - More SDing and and some other things you will just have to wait for
if only i didnt have work for 7 hours it would be almost complete..but ALAS i now have to wake up at 7 to commence....
i might even connect em to the HU for the time being.

if i wasnt working for 7 hours today, i might of not done this in such a rush......i got my jigsaw blades and was all ready to make some baffles...when i realised the jigsaw blade holder thingy was broken....GODDAM IT!
that will have to wait till tomorrow (school homework pending)
the SD Mat from jaycar seems pretty solid. but i still think some parts need to be coated in SD Paint as there is still a heap of rattles....as it is, it has made no noticable difference, lets hope when the trims are back on it does :d
i have encolosed pictures of how things went, i would really appreciate any advice or comments on how to improve on the sound deadning of the doors.
