hey

got some parts with surface rust etc on them, i want to clean them up so they look clean and respectable when i put them in the car

now, to get the rust off i know i should sand it, but is there some kind of metal treatmentyou can get in a can to stop it from coming back? i know u can get the killrust stuff but that makes everything go greeny black

you can get different colours of killrust....

um... theres some oil you can rub onto it to stop it from rusting i think...

yeah there is a few different things you can get.

when i did my manual conversion, the battery tray and body underneath had a reasonable amount of rust that i cleaned up (stupid normal batteries!). i used some combustion cleaner (carby flush/injector cleaner whatever else it gets called) that was laying around, just sprayed a bit on, left it for a few mins and sanded it back. but of course i sprayed it all after (surprisingly good colourmatching aswell!!)

what parts need cleaning?

if it is stuff that doesn't get seen, i'd recommend just doing a similar process to what i did, and just use a matt black killrust spray after (one that doesn't need primer will save time!)

not really sure about stuff that will be seen though, a clean up and a clear coat?

im in the middle of restoring an 1971 xy and it had its fair share of rust. ive used many rust converter products and the best buy far is Xtroll. it comes in spray can or a big paint tin, what it is is a rust treatment and prevetion coating(says rust conqueror on can as well)
all u need to do is wire brush it to take any lose bits off and then a light sand but if its out of sight then u dont need to sand. then clean with soapy water and dry. them spry a VERY LIGHT COAT otherwise it will run. it takes at least 24hrs to dry then u can recoat. it looks a bit yellowy to start but when it dries its clear. so if u had sanded it smooth and back to bare metal it would look polished and shinny once it dries. good luck :D oh yea it makes killrust look tame (dosent do as good of job, that was the first product i tried)not trying to stir anyone ive just used both

yeah the bits i wanna do is the shifter assembly and pedals etc...the shifter is covered in surface rust and even tho u dont really see the assembly it would annoy me to put a rusted unit into the car

would you need to remove them from the car to spray paint these bits or just a brush

the shaft in the auto is black metal it looks like a semi gloss

not that i look down at my pedals while driving :D

anyone know how to make the plastic bits look better also ??

most auto stores stock paint for plastics only(spray can) eg. auto one , supercheap etc etc
u jsut need to rough up the surface first and make sure its really clean
as for the pedals u dont need to remove them but it ensures that nothing gets oversprayed
so if u dont remove them make sure u go over board with the newspaper, clear plastic, cardboard or whatever u use to cover the surronding parts.u dont want any overspray

well i thought id show ya what to expect from Xtroll. this is a pic of the front of the falcon, the pics not the best quality sorry but u get the idea. now the front panel was badly rusted , also alot of surface rust. what u see here is the front panel coated in Xtroll , this pic is 6 months after it was coated. i like to leave it this long so i can ensure no rust comes back. u see its a project and there no time limit , just so it gets done right

pretty much
well if u want a good finish sand really good first then sand again with finer grade then wash with water and if u want wipe it over with grease and wax remover.if u want a shiny bare metal look just coat with xtroll cos it dries clear and shinny. if u want to paint it leave the xtroll for a couple more days otherwise when u paint on it the paint will bubble, it needs a good flash off period (all the solvents need to evapourate). would be a good idea to get a bit of scrap metal and coat it at the same time so when u want to paint it test on that first , so then ull know if it needs another day to dry or not. nothing i have used has compared to xtroll. u see i wanted the falcon the have no paint, just a polished bare metal look and this is perfect for that. most of the other products out there leave funny colours behind. also u wont find xtroll at a auto place, ull need to go to a propper paint shop some where that sells automotive paints like 2 pak etc etc. anything ur not sure on just ask :D

on my car between one of the engine mounts are mounted on there is a beam. it connects to the chasis on the drivers side.the rust has gone into this join and i need help to get rid of it. mine too was from a stuffed battery.

p.s a mate has an old hilux and wondered why the steering was hard all of a sudden the battery had moved onto the steering collum. it wore through the battery case.hahaha :D mmmm acid :)
