I've just finished rebuilding My Magna TS 4 cyl after Blowing the Head Gasket, and Cylinder Head into outer space. I've just replaced all the Tappets. The guy where i bought the reconditioned Head said to just put them in DRY... Which i did.... But they're making an awful Racket. Should i have primed them first whilst submersing them in OIL or Diesel. ( Which is what i wanted to do but oh no the man from engine force said...)
Anyway after removing the Rocker cover and manually turning the engine each Rocker arm LOUDLY CLICKS back up instead of smoothly and quietly.. IS that the norm or Should the Tappets be dampering that sound.... UMMMMM I'm stuck here ....
Thanks in Advance ... Shawn

The lifters should have been soaked in a bowl of oil and then primed, very basic procedure
how long did u run the enigine for? did the noise go down

They've been in for about 2 days now and still noisy.... I thought they had to be primed but was advised by ENGINEFORCE in joondalup WA to put them in dry... i would have thought he would have known as he rebuilds engines for a living..... But common sense tells you to prime them first... or so i thought.

OK i finally bit the bullet and pulled the Tappets out. I Primed them in oil and left them soaking all afternoon. Then i reprimed them and put them back in place, tightening down further to 28 nm (first setting on my wrench).I felt cautious as it's an Alu head and didn't want to thread it. It's now Purring like a kitten. Thanks to all for your advice... Shawn

I think the confusion here was when u mentioned the word 'tappet' when talking to the engine place,
Tappets can go in dry because they have to be manually adjusted, where as hydraulic lifters need to be primed as they work off oil pressure, if there no oil in there to begin with then as soon as u run the engine u end up damaging the inside and there for the lifter cannot pump up leaving u with a loud tapping sound

I hear what you say Clarion...But he did have the bag of Hydraulic Lifters he just sold me in his hand as he told me.. Oh well... all is well. In the past 2 separate garages told me that my Timing chain needed Tensioning... After replacing All the Tappets the sound dissapeared.... ummmm ahhhhh haaaaa ok i'm from the UK and we've always called them Tappets... I'd never heard of Hydraulic Lifters til i had me Mrs Macs installed. I reckon if everyone was like me this world would be a bloody great place hehehehe ....
