Well I got sick of the constant ticking noise of the tappets and plus the sort of grumbling noise coming from somewhere in my engine, so I took it down to my local mechanic to get fixed.
He had it all day and rang me back this arvo, he told me the 'grumbling' noise is the exust, and that needs to be replaced, from the cat right back to the tail pipe, and he wants $250....
Secondly, the tappet noise. He recons I got to replace all the tappets and wants $1100! I thought WTF!
Just wondering im sure some1 on here has replaced them before and did it cost ya that much?
My car is a 97 TF auto....
Cheers

I thought the TF had hrydraulic lifters? or are these different to tappets?
Exhaust is pretty standard price, though i cant see why you'd have to replace it cat back? seems abit strange.
As for the lifters/tappets, not sure how much they'd be but it's a pretty big job.

lifters norm between 10 and 20 bux each times that by the amount of valves
recomend using a good engine flush this will 9 times out of 10 stop the noise

Well firstly, i reckon the grumbling noise that ur mecanic reckons its from is suss. YOu say from the engine and he says from the exhaust. I had a grumbling sound, had all the belts in the engine replaced and now it doesnt grumble AT ALL. It cost me 100 bucks to do it...

the hydraulic lifters will usually only tick/tap loudly when they aren't getting any oil through them...
so i wouldn't say that all of them are gone...
you may be running to thin an oil...
i personally use 15W - 50
but yes it is a big JOB...so the price doesn't suprise me,,,
i will be taking my V6 head off on friday.. FUN FUN... as i have 1st cyclinder with no compression..
it is roughly a 5 hour job to take off the head.. and then the replacement bits.. and back on.. well you do the maths..
tappets dont need the head to come off... just the rocker cover and rocker gear as all these motors are OHC... i've gone plenty of 4cly ones, dunno specifics of a v6 though.

yeh actually u might b right there...
come to think of it...
yeh mind u i suppose i aren't doing the lifters.. i got a dud cyclinder :( so the heads gotta come off.
wonder y i thought that.. i know i am stilled bl00dy annoyed that i got to pull the head off of mine on my WKND!!! darn...
i got a dud cyclinder :( so the heads gotta come off. hopefully it's not the head that has the problem, just a blown gasket or something small...

Hydralic lifters are around $20-25 each, times 24(one for each valve) and than some hours to fit, doesn't sound unreasonable to me. My exhaust man has told me that he has seen some v6 magna's where the inside of the exhaust pipe can crack where the two header pipes join together.A good exhaust man should be able to cut open and repair.

For the tappets, try Nulon Worn Engine Treatment (Green Bottle) with 20/50 oil. It really does work wonders on the 3rd Gen V6 Engines. I have tried twice on two different cars with success.
Re the Grumbling noise, I had the same problem with mine. However, it dissappered when I had the timing belt replaced recently - could be a timing belt tensioner issue rather than exhaust.
