You'll be able to do it at home, provided that you're competent with hand tools and have some mechanical knowledge.

Going by your avatar, I'd say that you have a 3rd Gen, in which case auto servicing is quite a bit harder than a 1st or 2nd Gen.

As for fluid, either Genuine Mitsubishi or Castrol TQM-ST will be fine. You can use Dexron III, but it's not recommended, as it tends to give harsher shifts and increase transmission wear.

If you're planning on doing a flush, you'll need fluid to flush the autobox, plus fluid to refill it. (15-20L?) If you're just doing a drain and refill, I think Gen 3s have about 7 or 8L transmission capacities.

As for filters, you can either get them on their own, or in a kit. No idea as to prices, but a kit for my 2nd Gen was about $80.

For changing fluid, my advice would be to pick up a Gregorys or Haynes workshop manual, and follow it carefully. On 3rd Gens, the transmission filter is in front of, below and to the left of the air filter, if you're looking toward the windscreen from the front bumper. On 2nd Gens, the filter is located inside the transmission pan.

As for draining out the convertor, I don't think it'll empty out unless it's moving, ie. you're driving. To empty out the convertor, you'll need to get it professionally flushed.

Although, as magna buff said, your transmission may need more than just new fluid, it may need a kickdown band adjustment, or there could be something more seriously wrong.

you cant use dex III. use genuine....it is cheaper and it is the best. there is no external filter fitted as per previous 3rd gens. to drain properly you need to start engine while pipe disconnected. about 9 litres of tranny fluid required.

Hello jared,

Here's some information and photos that may help in doing the job yourself. It's from a 92 U.S Diamante but a lot of the same processes and procedures apply. Important - Make sure everything is tightened / torqued to correct specifications.
