View Full Version : Acceleration "dead spot" at 1800 rpm. TR 2.6ltr
Magna TR Exec. S/W Manual 2.6l. Trying without success so far to find the mysterious problem with my magna. Starts well and idles well. Accelerates fine until 1800rpm...then won't accelerate past that point, "dead spot". To keep mobile I have to keep changing up gears in order to keep revs under 1800rpm. Firstly, I replaced fuel filter...Problem still there! The bloke at local Mitsubishi(Armidale) had the car for a day to fix said that he thinks it may be the ECU because no fault codes were showing up. Quoted $850 for new one...eeeek!!!. I then had the ECU repaired by an electronics tech. who replaced a capacitor for $38. He couln't guarantee that the ECU was 100% repaired(no way of testing ECU). Put it back in...Exact same problem still there!
Could it be possible that one of the number of fuel regulars is faulty and be causing the ECU to play up? Would very much appreciate a reply from someone who may have some info on this problem.

Hello Rob,
You may want to look at the ISC (idle speed control/servo).
Check the post titled "Another TS with rough idle problems" on the ISC subject. It's posted in the "Second Generation Magna TR - TS"

could check the throttle positon sensor, vaccum hoses, etc, depends on how mechanically able you are. If not all that confident might be worth taking it to another mechanic for a second check
How do I check the Throttle Position Sensor?
Tested ISC as described here: http://www.stealth316.com/2-isc-iac.htm
Got ohm meter positive readings from pins 1 & 2; 2 &3; 4 &5; However, 5 & 6 has a zero reading. Is it normal for pins 5 & 6 to have a zero reading or is ISC malfunctioning?

I find when my TR is cold, it'll goto about 1800 like you say and then there'll be close to no acceleration until the engine temperature hits about 1/3...
Also a somewhat loud tapping sound when cold, I only noticed this happening after I had to replace the ECU...
An expensive but happy ending...took a chance on a new ECU. Vrrrmmmm...1200rpm..1800rpm..2200rpm..YIPPEEEE!! It goes like a rocket!

Well done mate.
How much did the ECU end up costing you?
I had to get one second hand, when mine mysteriously burnt out...
Exchange ECU from Injectronics through Repco $493.
