If you get down on the floor on a TR and look under the dash, towards the top of the gas pedal (near where its connected to the firewall)
Theres a switch, when the pedal is pressed its disconected, but when you release the pedal it touches up against it completing the circuit or grounding it or something.

Almsot like the brake light switch for the brake pedal, but on the gas pedal.

Whats this for?

As soon as you put any pressure on the pedal, its disconnected.

So it wouldnt be kickdown for obvious reasons.

21 - 3 - 10

The accelerator switch is an on/off switch mounted on the accelerator pedal bracket. its purpose is to signal the automatic control unit what position the pedal is in, i.e. released or depressed. The infomation signal the control unit to engage second gearwith the vehicle stationary at idle, thus reducing idle vibrations and vehcle creep

21 - 3A - 10

Faulty switch operation may result in:-

* Excessive idle vibration
* Excessive vehicle "creep" in drive at idle
* Poor "take off"
