Hi,
I have recently fitted a K&N pod straight onto the MAF. I have lost alot of power and fuel economy went from 600K's per tank to 520K's per tank. I'm told this is because the air temp is raised under the bonnet. It got me wondering how much hotter is the air, so I rigged up a digital thermometer so that the probe was sticking into the air intake where I have fitted a blanking plate in place if the noise resonator just at the TB entrance. I was really surprised at the results. On the highway it went 24 degrees higher then ambient temp and around town 31 degrees higher then ambient this is averaged out over 2 hours of driving. I repeated this with the stock air box and stock filter and highway was only 15 degrees up and around town was only 20 degrees up. I'm really interested in doing this again with a CAI setup(still waiting EZ Boy) to see what temps I get. In my option the pods are just causing more probs then they fix if they are not in a CAI setup.

Thanx.

Excellent work. Another interesting experiment (that I never got around to doing) was to measure the pressure drop across various parts of the intake system. I suspect the CAI style intake doesn't actually reduce temperatures as much as it reduces pressure drop through a less restrictive intake duct.

Well done. Maybe put the innfo into the wiki, and put it into a graph if you logged it. Would like to see your results with proper CAI or with modifications to the stock system or using heat shields.

Im still waiting to borrow the manometer from the uni. And will hopefully get some results.

Don't bother borrowing a manometer just make one, out of fish tank hose, a broom handle, a coke bottle with coloured water and a mate to hold it. That is my next lil experiment to measure the drops on the different systems, race ya to see who can do it first.

Yep definately make one, a lot easier :D Here's some info on how to make one. This was copied from 21st Century Performance by Julian Edgar published by Clockwork Media. This is possibly one of the best books that i have ever read on how to modify a late model car. I definately suggest you go out and buy a copy!

You are! But inventive too. I think I'll wait for the other one, as it can sit in my lap and not leak and has peak hold functions.
