Probably something to do with the ISC (Idle Speed Controller), a stepper motor that adjusts your idle speed.
I'm having the same problems again, hoping I haven't blown the ISC, cost me about $300 to get it fixed last time I had mine gone. HOPING it's something to do with shorting the battery and reseting stuff, but not looking too good...

Just sat in the garage running the engine for about ten minutes, testing a few things out, then took it for a daignostic run - here's what I found;

1. Engine doesn't stall when driving with the aircon on. Not sure about with lights only, but testing in the garage seemed to indicate that a bit of load helps keep it above the cutout point.

2. Engine still stalls when no load is applied, specifically when going from a "drive" situation to a "foot on the clutch", in which case the revs drop fast, attempt to stabilise, but drop past the cutout point. Particularly annoying/dangerous, as it's usually in a situation where you're trying to turn, downshift, and brake at the same time, so rather hard to keep a foot on the accelerator as well.

So any diagnostic people out there who can tell me whether it's trying to relearn, whether it needs a base idle adjustment, or whether the ISC is screwed? To me, it looks like the ISC is still working, but to what degree?
If it's still relearning, any ideas on how to "train" it? I tried "training" in the garage, looked possibly like it did something with the load situations, but can't figure out a good way of doing it for non-load situations, as when sitting there and reving it the revs don't drop as quickly as when driving...

Hi im new to this so forgive me if i stuff up

I have 91 tr magna automatic and fuel injected.

I have had recent problems with my car stalling.

THe mechanic changed the timing on it but it didnt help much. I took it to another mechanic who told me my injectors are leaking air. and that its going to cost over $300 to fix. However all i did was go and get my injectors cleaned and new O rings and it now runs fine.:)

I had the same prob, would stall at the traffic lights etc once hot as the revs dropped and the idle wouldn't recover on my 92 TR 2.6. The garage said it was the IAC? stepper motor quoted $480NZ  so I decided not to change it, I cleaned it out a few times and not much difference, raised the idle so it wouldn't drop so low.... temp patch up!

80,000K later I had the valves re cut on the head and was able to lower idle back down with no stalling, now another 75,000K later I'm still have the same old idle stepper motor and idle is fine.

So i'm not sure about the tecnical explanation but I think the stepper could no longer compensate with leaking valves. Just another angle to look at!

howdy,

Heres my story: (lucky it was at 7AM & hardly any traffic)

I had a service on the day & i was on the way to my cousins when I get to the top of my court and the car shuts-off.

I'm like wtf ?

Switch the ignition on again, starts up , drives for a bit down a street , shuts-off again. This happened once more on the way there. Finally get to my cousins tell them whats happening with it, so slowly drive to the Mechanics (15/20mins away) and the car gets there fine.

Fuel Relay Pump died, which makes the car stall, and shut-off.

Mechanic told me I was lucky to get there & it died when they got it.

Thought this might help people also, not just to check ISC.

good luck with it
