Stupidly i turned on my stereo (going to the shop incidently for screws) with my 6.5" woofers out of the doors and only my tweeters wired up and getting the full amount of my amps power. They went bang!
Splits were Focal Access A1's, replacement cost for the tweeters from Focal is $170 which is ridiculous when i paid around $220 for the whole set.
Anyways, been searching around on the net today and discovered some cheaper alternatives....1" tweeters from Jaycar are $45 (im assuming the same tweeters from the kevlar splits?). Also, Hertz have 20mm Hi Energy tweeters for $95.
Does anyone know of any other alternatives? And will any tweeter work with my Focal crossovers?
The Hertz tweeters are quite nice but before you do anything, look at why the old ones blew first.
First things first; were your gains set correctly? If they're not set correctly you'll open your speakers up to a myriad of potential issues. You don't want to keep blowing them up. :(

oh, you would be a good one to answer this actually. I'm pretty sure i know what blew the tweeters. I had my splits all installed, but the other day took out the woofers to add a shroud behind the speaker to protect it from water. During this i needed screws so i had to take my car to the shop. So the stereo turned on with only the tweeters wired up. I didnt know it at the time, but i guess this means the tweeters alone were getting the full 80WRMS i had my gains set at! OOOPS!!!
I'm assuming i CAN use any tweeter with my focal crossover?
Today i saw that Ebay has a few tweeter options as well, Soundstream, JBL and rockford fosgate tweeters quite cheap....
The soundstreams looked good.....at only $29! TWS.3 is the model number and can be seen in this link (http://www.soundstream.com/sub/products_TWEETERS.html)

Were the crossovers still in place or were they bypassed dude? Remember tweeters that receive a full range signal will suffer horribly. :(

dunno what you mean, but, it was all hooked up as normal with the crossover (tweeter, woofer and input), and working fine, when all I did was disconnect the woofers at the doors and take them out. Wires were still attached as per normal on the crossover, there was just no woofers on the end of the wires for the woofers. Gains werent touched, and was set on about 90wRMS high passed around 100hz...
stupidly, wires were left dangling in the doors, and at first i thought the positive and negative ends may of touched, so i dunno if it was that or the tweeters got too much power with no woofers in, or something else....
