Ok.
I am out of answers:
At times, my car seems to accelerate MUCH better than on other times. There is no specific reason such as Air Termperature, Engine Temperature etc. it just happens ...regardless of outside factors.....it goes to the extent that in 3rd gear on dry road my wheels spinn just by hitting full throttle (ok...they dont anymore...but did on the 205 wheels) what i mean is:
What can cause my ride to act like that???
I have never experienced anything like this before.....Totally stuck! Any hints at all?
I have asked several AMC owners, and it seems as if nut just I have this problem.
HELP!

Dodgy sensor somewhere? eg. O2 sensor.
Had a compression test done?
Could just be the ECU not use to your different driving styles?

K..checked so far:
Compression - good
plugs - new front and rear
leads - good
Distributor - good
fuel/ fuel filter - good
airfilter - awesome
not checked: Sensors - could it be that??

OK..got the Tip that it could be MAF....in combination with Pod..... I never actually looked at the MAF in detail.....will check and post. Thanks!

Air con? i had this prob a little while ago...
i knew that the air con took power out of the car, i just didnt realise how much! mine will chirp into gears aircon off but now with it on... it just has that little bit less urge.

Chantra throw on the stock intake and test it out standard. I put the pod on mine today made the car run like crap. On idle the thing was blowing black smoke excessively rich. On the High revs it was ok but the performace side of things it was very inconsistant. One min it would rev really well then afterwards it would strugle. Also with the maf be careful with the honey comb, can easily get damaged. Just a tip dont remove it some people do this and some vehicles exhibit problems when this is done. If going back to stock and problem doesnt re occur try a panel filter instead with the stock intake.

When I had the pod in, I found it depended on throttle position. At WOT throttle the car is running in open loop, and god knows what the AFR is. It use to really bog down something terrible and be pretty inconsistent.
It seemed to be quicker with part throttle, keeping the car running in closed loop. More power down low then flooring it as the revs got higher.
I fixed the problem by going back to the stock filter :)

Thanks mate for the hint...
I switched the filters back and forth....no difference....sometimes she runs like mad...sometimes she just runs...... :doubt:

It could be a vacuum leak somewhere Chan...

It could be a vacuum leak somewhere Chan...
....hmmm....please elaborate, mate.... :)
Auto or manual?
If its auto, its a Invecs III gearbox so it will "learn" the drivers habits. For example, my car at this point in time is like a rocket because its the weekend and all its been doing is buning around the city, with little stop start and nice little bursts for "fun" driving. As of tomorrow morning at 9am it will be slauggy as all hell after sitting on the freeway at 40km/h for an hour getting to work. I also find the gearbox sluggish after long drives constintly sitting on 110km/h.

Chantra has a manual. Check out the vacume hoses around the throttle body and anywhere else you can see them around the engine. When you loose performance does the car run rough on idle or is it still smooth?

I have EXACTLY the same problem. I am looking at sensors at the moment - most likely MAF.
Sometimes you get silly power, sometimes you get meh power.
Also feels like the car just 'revs' out in the gears, without any power.
I have two magnas, so I think an airflow meter swap is in order...

@ ash : yes, manual
@ wrexed : idle is smooth
@ heath: buddy, if you find the problem, please post it ASAP. Will do the same (if I ever figgure it out)

What condition is your clutch in? It could be possible your clutch is overheating sometimes and not putting all the power tot he wheels.....possibley :P

Naw, mate....its definately nothing to do with the clutch.
Anyways...I have emptied a bottle of Injector cleaner into the tank....dont really think that can solve the problem....but it cant harm.
Will keep updating here.

Ok....just had a longer conversation with Sidewinder42 on MSN.
While we were chatting I remembered something:
When I bought the car, I had to get a RWC for it. There was a slight leak in the middle muffler (the one right behind the cat)....I had to get it changed - They did change it to a HotDog muffler.....
Only after this muffler change did the problems start
That still doesn not explain the inconsistency to me, but I must presume that this is the problem.
Can anyone confirm this theory, please?
Cheers!

Hrm... Interesting.
Items of interest there. Cat converter (known issues with blockages, fragile - ie. you can loosen them from their case if you hit it too hard, they go sliding around and periodically block and unblock the exhaust) and oxygen sensor (at front of cat, could be poisoned, wirning loose, melted etc.).
May be worth getting someone to have a looksee at this. I still think I have cat issues, it makes rattling noises sometimes. Car also sounds distinctly odd when it is started (compared to my old exec).

I talked to Anthony (Philcom Rally) about it...it COULD definately be the problem.
I have asked several other AMC members as well.....I think I might have to presume it is somewhere in the exhaust chain......$$$ are going again.... :doubt:

Not sure what setup you have now. But if the exhaust and cat are gone. Go for a high flow cat and a 2.5 exhaust. What the hell its only money.

LOl..yeah....true.....I might go for the whole system.....But Bain pointed out a possible problem with my Throttle body......what he told me makes sense in my eyes...i will check it out now and get back here
UhOh...just checked TB:

??? What are we looking at here that warrants an UhOh ?? Do you get weird issues with throttle response as well (same as I do?)

Seems so....
here is what happens to me at times:
You are on full throttle, and then release the pedal completely...the car slows down...but only after 3 to 5 seconds does the engine break really come into effect...i.e. a stuck TB.
Bain asked me if the edges of the TB were black/darkened.....well...they are! What does this mean exactly? New butterfly? will that do?
Waiting so hear his (or anyones) comments on my TB...is it hacked??

best bet is PM EZ BOY boris. but also if u can take the TB out and jus try to clean up all the stucky bits and that might help. im not much of a tech person but ill drop by after tafe today if u want.
Bain asked me if the edges of the TB were black/darkened.....well...they are! What does this mean exactly? New butterfly? will that do?
Waiting so hear his (or anyones) comments on my TB...is it hacked??The carbon buildup around the edges of the butterfly and edge could mean your throttle is sticking. This affects response, idle, high idle etc etc.
Wont need a new butterfly or tb, it just needs a clean. :)
Anyhow. As discussed, ill meet up with you tonight and we will give it a bit of clean out (al KB and EGO style) If this helps in anyway, we will organise a date to pull it off and give it a proper clean.

Well...
thanks to Bain's tip about cleaning the Throttle Body....the problem has almost resolved itsself.
My TB was do damn mucky and greasy...nothing could really flow through there...
Bain cleaned it up (Thanks, Bain!!), she is running MUCH better since....new O/S and HighFlowed TB already ordered.
Will post result on Friday after I installed it.
Again....this Club is really great. Thx to all!

Drove her again this morning....still she is running much better than before.
I am assuming the main problem IS related to my Throttle Body.
Thanks again to Bain!

No worries bud.
I dont think it had been cleaned since the car came out of the factory.. I still cant believe a mechanic didnt advise you to have it cleaned..

Went to Midas this morning. Showed the dirty rags and made my point. (They were supposed to clean the TB!!)
Got an instant refund of 200 bucks.
I can live with that...But I aint frequenting Midas again anytime soon....

Hey, instant refund with no arguments is pretty damn good. Most woulda said you could have grabbed that rag from anywhere!

True, but he could have just taken the air intake off and pointed at the spots i couldnt get to without actually pulling the TB off..
The TB had years of Carbon buildup.. not months worth :)
Some areas around the butterfly it was as thick as a fingernail!

Agreed.
It would have been easy to prove that they did not do anything...But since they had it on the Bill.....there was no problems with the refund. - Better for them, too!
Anyways:
I am OK with the way it went. One customer less for Midas, tho!

I have the car, I have a camera ...

:confused:Take off the air intake (1 o-ring screw) pull on the throttle cable to move the butterfly to an open position and check for black crap all around the edges of the butterfly and TB.

Hey Bain. Can you re-use the gasket between T/B and manifold?

Dont know mate, havent had to pull one off yet to give it a proper clean.
I guess you could if it hasnt gone brittle.

I might give mine a clean before Heathcote this weekend. I have to get my inlet manifold helicoiled ( a wood duck screwed the thread when doing my rear plugs  ) so i will buy a T/B gasket as well.

A-rite....
I am now the proud owner of a RPW Oversized (65mm) and HighFlowed Throttle body.
Tested so far:
Performance at 0 to 0,007 km/h because I was stuck in rush hour traffic the whole bloody way back to Doncaster (From Clayton).
The response is MUCH better i.e. quicker than before.
The engine idles well and runs smoother.
The acceleration is overal better - feels as if there is much more Torque at low revs now - again I must say that I hardly ever drive this bloody slow...may have simply never noticed.
The one time I DID rev out 1st and 2nd gear was very good, considering the air temperature today.
Overall I paid $360 to get it within 1 day and get it fitted. I am happy with my choice and am advising everyone who has similar problems as I described : Clean your Throttle Body!!
Thanks for all the help I got here. Great guys! Cheers !
(By the way there was a terrible accident along PrincessHwy. A truck mowed down several signal lights and possibly other cars as well..I did not look much..I hate drivers that cause a traffic jam because they are staring at an accident on the other side.....there were about 10 Police cars, 3 Ambulances and what not .... around 2.45pm today.)

Sounds good Chantra did you install it yourself or did you get someone else to do it for you? Are those tyres spinning now??
Chantra
15-02-2006, 05:51 PM
LOL...
naww....those were the old days on 205ver stilts <ggg>
Alone the torque at low revs is enough for me to justify the purchase.....
Oh..and No, mate...all got installed for me...I had a cigarette and food at Subways while the mechanic did it all ....Oh...He said that he was quite surprised about how much power a Magna has.....I wonder how he tested that....Blake...any ideas?? :D
Anyways...all good....but no spinning tyres in 3rd.....without clutch

about 60 bucks I believe - as said I had an agreement with TJWRX for the lot including fitting , express post and item. see above posts for total price.
What mattered to me most was that I got that TB in a Day! Congrats ! Great job!
