Hey mate's
just thought i would let you all know that i have found some sick LED's for behind your dials. i got them from auto one and they are $8.80 for 2. they come in 8 different colours. I got blue
They work very well. i recomend them to all

cheers

They look good and easy however thanks to 2Much, I went to Jaycar, brought the resistor and led for about 2 bucks each and have a huge range of what I want including brightness and position

I was on my way to jaycar to get the led's and resistors but i stoped off at auto one first and i thought i would give these a go and they arnt to bad at all. i dont think that they are as good as making them like you did but they do the job.

well the lights in the packet just slide into the little plastic casing. its a peace of cack

I have them! Same colour aswell. At first i bought the ones that flash from red to blue but they are no good.
When you have lights on, at the top of the speed dial and out towards the edges does yours fade? Mine is only bright blue where the actual lights are.

Mine were $7.95. :p

I also got the blue ones, i bought mine for $8.80 also, i put em em about 7 months ago when i bought the Rada (i always change the dash lights in every car i buy coz i hate the stupid green look) they make the dash look awesome, i also put the blue in the roof lights, parkers and in the centre console ie. ash tray, ciggerette lighter, clock, glove box. i tried to put em in the climate but couldnt just get there :( Also get the Autotechnica ultra blue/white headlights + high been bulbs, they make the night time look so much clearer and better than the yellow headlight look

In my KR, I have put the 2 small ones that glow down fron the front and one each side of the speedo, I have bent them around a bit and got good light at speedo and fading off to the sides, looks great, i hate bright dials, like the dull light

Snagma
27-10-2003, 06:11 PM
hey MagnaMad
Mine are the brightest directly in front of the LED and it fades away like yours must. they still look mad though.

Mikey
are the lights in the center consol the same as behind the dials? coz i would like to do that aswell

Mikey
27-10-2003, 06:22 PM
they are the real small ones, i couldnt find a replacement blue globe for it, i just bought the rubber condoms for them ones, they work just as good, they also give out a darker blue color

Snagma
27-10-2003, 06:27 PM
I was wondering if those condoms where any good. cheers mate i will go down tomorrow and get um

cheers

Mikey
27-10-2003, 06:52 PM
Yeah they are good, but if u can find the smaller globes, its best to go for them, its all based on $$$ condoms are like $2 for 6 while 2 globes are about $8

Have you ever pulled your cluster out?

They already have blue ones on there

That gives you a good idea on how good they are lol

Snagma

just relaised your from newcastle too.
what part mate

Snagma

i was thinking that befor. i had my cluster off and i noticed that there was blue ones on. i didnt know if it was supose to be showing blue light

Killbilly
27-10-2003, 07:11 PM
Yeah I dunno if they're supposed to be blue..but if you get the lights going, they look green anyway...the yellow light from the globes makes them greeny/blue.

The covers are useless.

27-10-2003, 07:23 PM
are urs behind or infront of the dials?

Snagma
27-10-2003, 07:35 PM
mine are behind the dials. they where easy to install

Mikey
27-10-2003, 10:14 PM
The ones on the car are light blue, u can buy dark blue condoms, thats what i bought, its a big improvement and very noticable

Matt
28-10-2003, 07:20 AM
i took off the standard blue connies that are on there, and put the darker ones on, and could barely see my dials at night, and that was with the brightness all the way up. they suck so now i have no connies on them, and if u set the brightness right, they look orange. If your gonna do it get LED's.

Killbilly
28-10-2003, 07:25 AM
Yeah I though that's what would happen.

Mikey
28-10-2003, 07:59 PM
i still got my dark ones on it, ive had no problems with it, clear to see too....
i would prefer LED's but im sellin the Verada now $6000 anyone? :)

think you can take a photo of your dash all lit up?

The Elite

Here's mine all lit up... It's got two LED's in front...

It's not the clearest pic but you get the idear !

I've also put one LED in the ring around the ignition switch .

I've just got to put one in each guage on the piller... I've already
payed for them im just awaiting delivery. (This is what the moon
shapes are at the top right of the pic..)

looks very nice! Who did you get the white dials from?

My car doesnt have the ignition switch clear ring :(

I made them Myself !!! :D

Kim

Looks really good. Yours are much brighter than mine :(

The Elite
10-01-2004, 07:55 PM
I used 2 x 3mm Superbright LED's which have a resistor on each of
them to allow them to run at 12v and there wired into where the original
globes were wired to, so that the brightness can be turned up and down
with the rest of the dash....

Madmagna
11-01-2004, 01:15 AM
it is so simple, solder the led and resister into the factory globe holder, this is what I did

The Elite
11-01-2004, 10:47 AM
It is VERY simple, although I did it a bit different to you madmagna...

I removed the original globes and left the holders in there location.

I removed the Green and Orange ribbin cable.

And I also removed the thin piece of clear plastic with the Black markings
on it so it would make the LED's brighter !!!

I then drilled two little holes in the White plastic piece that the original
globes mount on, I drilled the holes in such a way that they position the
LED's exactly where I wanted the light to shine.

I then Epoxyed the LEDs in and ran the wires to the nut and bolt setup
where the original Green and Orange ribbin cable went...

And, Hay Presto !!! (It even worked  )

It's also totaly reversable, except for the 2 little 3mm holes I drilled !!!

can i just ask - when attaching the resistor to the LED, does it go to the cathode (-) or the anode (+) cant remember now... ta

?????????? :D

As in, how did you make your dials? Material, etc?

Madmagna
12-01-2004, 05:22 PM
Was not aware the resistor had to on either one, I think mine are on the -itv side....

yeah id say so - wouldnt mind knowing how you got them white dials. ive done the LED mod, but looks lame with black dials compared to your white ones

The Elite
13-01-2004, 08:15 AM
The resistor can go on either but, generally it goes on the positive
leg because a LED is like a one way valve for current and the current
flows from - to +.

More important is to use the correct value resistor !

What brightness LED's are you guys using? I work at Dick Smith and we sell a couple of different intensity blue led's, the brightest being 8000mcd.
A few people have said that they fade towards the edges and im wandering if its the pre mades ones, might not be that bright....check on the packet and see. theyre rated in MCD, with 8000 being the highest we stock.

and getting the right resistor value??

R=(E-Vf) X 1000/I

where
R= the resistance in Ohms
E= the supply voltage (12v)
Vf= the forward voltage of the LED, typically 2v, but the 8000mcd is 3.6
I= the current of the LED in milliamps

Be interested to know what those pre made ones are rated at :D

The Elite

I don't know all the indepth s@#t

All I know is that there called super bright LED's in the colour of Blue..

I got mine made up by a guy on Ebay his ad is in the RC section..

He is a top bloke and he's more then willing to help out as he is a
fellow REV head.. (A Rotary fan just like ME :D )

Ive just finished doing the LED dash mod with the dick smith bright blue LED's @8000mcd. they come in different degree angles - the ones i used being 20 degrees, the coverage is fine with a little fiddling and unless you can get 180 degree ones, (not sure you can)could be wrong, everything should be fine..

a trivial thought for the day - most items rated at 12V are in actual fact slightly higher. it would more likely be 13.4V. this definately comes into play when calculating your resistor value.

For example, to drive an LED from your car's 12v system, use the following values:

Source Voltage = 13.4 volts (12v car systems aren't really 12v in most cases)
Voltage Drop = 3.6 volts (Typical for a blue or white LED)
Desired Current = 30 milliamps (again, a typical value)

So the resistor you'd need is:

(13.4 - 3.6) / ( 30 / 1000 ) = 327 ohms

if you want to work these out you can work it out yourself (sounds exciting) or use a JavaScript resistor calculator - do a search somewhere

pic below is of my dash using 8000mcd, 20 degree dick smith LED's, you can see where it fades off to the edges.. im thinking to eliminate this you could instead of 1 LED for each light, use 2 in series facing back-to-back - this should spread the light more evenly.. im in the process of doing this in the next few days, see how it goes

why not just add more lights? i cant say i overly like it but it does make the orange needles look cool.

I work at Dick Smith and we sell a couple of different intensity blue led's

Do you know how much they are?

Glenn
14-01-2004, 03:58 PM
the price for the bright blue 8000mcd LED's are 8.95 each.
:o

and if i remember rightly - about 5/6.95 each for the lower 1500mcd (i think) ones.. bright blue again

Snagma
14-01-2004, 05:18 PM
Hey TR-IFFIC
Are all of your lights LED's now?? like are the ones behind and shining down both blue?

Glenn
14-01-2004, 06:28 PM
in that pic above i only had the blue LED's on the top, im in the process of putting 2 blue led's in the back centre part over the centre dial, and 2 red LED's on either side ( temp/fuel and tacho ) so the redline part ( not that i go anywhere near it in my stocko 4cyl :) ) lights up red just for the extra effect. ditto for the temp guage...
