My dad took my car to work and put it in at our mechanic to get a pink slip. I had this rattling noise in my engine which i asked my dad to tell the mechanic about. The mechanic said my engine mount if F#$%*D!!!!! He asked my dad if i flog the car....which i don't. I have had the rattling noise in my car since i bought it so whoever had the car before me must have flogged the hell out of it. The mechanic told my dad that it cost ALOT of $$$$'s. Is it work keeping the car or buying a new one? If its had the hell flogged out of it then whats the use of paying for new engine mount and stuff if its already been abused! I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS! I have only had the car since July 05!

I dunno...i just rang the mechanic to talk to him about it and he said its several engine mounts? if the car has had the hell flogged out of it is it more likely to have major porblems in the near future? im tempted to sell it and buy a brand new car which i know im the only one who has driven it and it has been looked afta!
Dont be too worried mate,
Engine mounts are a big weakness in Magna's.
I had my engine mounts replaced 2 times (warranty) when i owned the VRX.
No point in selling the car, losing more money on it and then buying another car that may have a worse history to it.

Is it expensive for the mounts to be put in though? Don't they have the pull the engine out and stuff?
Also if i was to sell the car i would buy a brand new car which wouldn't have a history on it. I would be making the history as i would be the one and only owner.

They're easy to replace...you don't have to pull the motor out.
You support the motor from underneath (a small jack with a piece of wood on it to avoid damage to the sump will suffice), then you undo the bolt to the mount that you want to remove, remove the mount, get a new one press fitted in and then replace.
And to quote Haynes manuals "Refitting is reverse of removal" lol
I've simplified that somewhat but thats basically what I did when I replaced mine.

I'll leave the instalation for the mechanic....i know nothing about the engines of cars! When my dad rang me he made out like i was better off getting a new car.....clearly thats not the case though. He told me that the mechanic said it was going to be big $$$$'s? So here i am panicing when i don't really need to.

It really isn't that hard to do. If you know how to undo and do-up a bold and use a jack you're pretty much half way there. Just go to a local spares place (repco/sprints etc) and get the workshop manual there. That'll explain it all in detail

Find another mechanic................ anyone with a jack and a set of spanners can replace engine mounts. Should be able to do all of them in a morning with a little help from a friend or family member if you don't know jack about cars.
True, if all the mounts need replacing it will be expensive (probably $500-$600), but if you can find a place that makes polyeurathane(sp?) mounts.... then your new ones will last forever. Have a look in the qld section for more info on this sort of engine mount.

easy as pie to change yourself, especially the front one on a 2ND Gen, But you can take the broken one out as KB described and then use something like Sikaflex or i dont remmeber to make a almost hard or solid engine mount.

Like Black Beard said, i would call around how much other mechanics charge for swapping engine mounts. You can buy them from MEGATRON in queensland for around $100 a piece, which are the better and harder ones, which last longer. I have 2 of them also that im using.
That way you save a bit of money getting these instead of the mitsi ones. And they will last alot longer. But yeah, call other mechs and find out cost of replacement.
as no one else has mentioned, oil can be death to OEM mounts, bit of oil, warm wether and plenty of stop-starts will see them through quickly. Like most have said, talk to Megatron and get the softest poly mount if you want them to outlast your car (the harder the mount the more vibration the car gets)
p.s. your mechanic sounds like a toss telling you that you should just go out and blow a sh!tload more cash when the problem is pretty minor (vs a new engine). If i was you i wouldn't be seeing him again.

yeah, as has been said before - ur mechanic seems to be the problem here.
he's catastrophysing the situation, which is really nowhere near that bad. get a second opinion.
thats why a mechanic you can trust is worth his (or her) weight in gold.

Its all good....its only 1 engine mount which is faulty. My dad told me what he said and my dad exagerated a hell of alot. I can't remember weather the mechanic said its the front of the back one but he said he can fix it for me for $240. I told him i gotta get my 105,000km service done in 7,000km's and he said he can do it for me then. Also while i was getting the pink slip done i got him to put in the new timing chain and now the rattling noise is almost gone. He said the little rattling noise that is left is the exhaust or something rattling on the engine or something cuz of the mount. i can't remember what he said but im glad that the rattling is almost gone!

Do your self a favor and change to a qualified mechanic !
If the rattle was from the timing chain and he replaced the timing chane then the rattle will have gone completely !
The rattle comes from when the chain is over worn or streached alowing the chain to "rattle" against the inside of the timing chain guide !
This rattle is first noticed when you start the car up and as the oil presure builds up after a few seconds the rattle goes away !
You can adjust the timing chain tho but If the rattle is still there when you first start your car he has adjuted it not changed it !
Be sure what the mechanic has said as you are talking thru dad ! lol

p.s he now keeps a bit of chain in the car just in case.

The timing chain has to be replaced before 100,000k's neway so i asked him to change it for me. I've been going to this mechanic for years so i know hes not screwing me around. It might sound bad cuz half of this has gone from him and then to dad and then to me.
