View Full Version : Engine Braking Whine

Because of my driving style, which is to use the engine as a brake, which means double decluching down through the gears I am getting a strange whine when slowing up, it sounds a little like turbo whine and it only happens when the car is moving.
When I got the car the dipstick preveous owner had not bothered checking the oil, or done any matanence on it and I put 3 liters of oil in at the first gas station I found, I presumed that after I had the car a while and the correct amount of oil in it the noise would go away, but it is still there, I can live with the noise if nothing bad is happening.
Any ideas, as I have not found any past posts with this probem

Thank Meph, I don't mind it, just didn't know if it was normal or something to worry about, I reckon the exhaust note is cool (Kewl) too, but mine may have a hole in the front muffler; dunno, don't care

I disagree, engine braking is a great idea, its even taught when you learn to drive. There is no excess impact on the gearbox or engine thats going to cause any damage, unless of course you want to put it back into 2nd while travelling at 100km/h, just ask a truckie.

You drive an auto, so im not sure if your aware, you have to engine brake while slowing in a manual as then you have the power when you need it to accelerate again. Yeah there are some slackers who just put the clutch in and put the engine in first or neutral and ride the brakes to the red light (not that good for your brakes) but if it goes green before they come to a stop they dont know where they are, what gear to be in, i can just accelerate (and beat the autos that are down shifting).

Engine braking wont do any damage to your gearbox as long as you roughly match the revs of the engine and slip the clutch, as i said as long as your not going too fast for the gear, and you dont just drop the clutch, your going to have alot more control over what your cars doing.

I always engine brake i cant get out of the habbit lol. I agree with Meph about engine braking while approaching the lights, i just gear down and when the light goes green, im in the perfect gear :)

dunno about double clutching like a tool in a road car but ive always downshifted all my manuals and was taught so when learning to drive, never crapped a box etc yet
