hi all. First of all, i am new. Seems like a great site that you have here. I have been recently given a 1998 mitsubishi magna. TJ Executive, 5 speed manual, blue ( more of an aqua), 3L V6, 140K Km on the clock. I was just wondering what "faults" this year and magna had, so i can keep an eye on it. I test drove it before i brought it. The left hand tyre was down ( you could feel it in the steering). Felt very perky. Way more powerfull than my brothers camry ( 1994 4cy. Done 260k so far, still goinng with no-engine rebuild).

So, any known faults or anything that would help about this type of magna.

Thanks in advance

98 TJ? i think you mean TF, TJ's didnt come out till 2000 or 2001.

As for faults i have a 98 and have not had one problem with it aside from the steering rack which knocks,

Considering u have a manual you dont have to worry about any auto probs as there were a few with this trans, with the engine listen for noisy lifters (loud tapping sound) and inspect the mounts (drivers side engine mount rubber common for breaking)

You can get 3.0 litre TJ's. I know someone with one.

Yes you can get 3L TJ's and yes a 98 is not a TJ, i'd say TF like others have said.
Yeh the knocking and engine mounts and auto are the things to look out for, not auto for you so that really leaves 2 :).
And then there's your standard oil leaks etc. but mostly problems that are caused by poor servicing.

thats for all the imput. Im quite surprised that i go such a quick reply, consitering that i only posted around like 11 last night.

From the understanding of what the dealership said, it was a TJ Executive. About the engine size, though. I am pretty sure i saw 3L on the side of the car. However, i could be wrong. The red line starts at 6,000, if it helps anyone.

Someone mentioned to me about the frameless windows, about the quicker you go, the less noise that you hear from the inside, because of the pressure or something. Is that true?

Thanks everyone

Look at the engine number. If it says 6G72 its a 3.0 litre. 6G74 is a 3.5. With the frameless windows i never wind mine down over @ 140 'cause i can never get the things wound up again!

Being a 98 it will be either a late TE or a TF (more likely).

Buy lookin at the rear window, if the stop light is at the base of the window it will be a pre TH(99) if it is at the top of the rear window it will be either a TH or TJ.

Now rear problems with the cars except little things to look for ss Clarion MAgna already mentioned.

Enjoy the car, manuals are awsome in late model Magnas, I know I enjoy mine :P

As far as I know the 3.0L was an option in the lower spec magna models until the "Series II" facelift in about June/July 02 - when the 3.0L was dropped from the lineup all together.

So yes, 3.0L TJ's exist, but not all pre series II TJ's were 3.0L....... infact from what I know, they are pretty rare.

that would be cool if it is a rare car. Might raise the value of it in a couple of years time :D

nah it wont, its only a magna and its not the "rare" that ppl want, i thik the only magna that "might" be worth collecting or hold their value a little better are the ralliarts

yeh, that would be true. I have the car today. It drives like a dream. Put a double dose of injector cleaner through it (to make sure those injectors are clean). Im surprise how much power it has, that speedo warning beep goes off really quick when u get to 80 ( in 2nd). Really is a nice car.

well if u have an auto, i have hit 100km/h in 2nd gear..., i think someone said it goes further but i don't want to push it, and yes the 3.0l is a nice engine.

If your willing to redline and have a 3.5 with 4 speed auto, she'll take you to 150km/hr + in 2nd gear. Flamin' pulls like a steam train...

his is a 5 speed manual, which will also hit 100km/h in 2nd, but its something i very rarely do in mine! (only at the drags)

yeh, it gets to like 90 before i take my foot off in 2nd ( don't wanna go into the red). The only thing is, what type of fuel economey can u get in the city cycle. I currently have done like 200km and it's a little bit down from the 3/4 line on the fuel gadge, would that sound about right?
