Which leads me to ask what is so special/different to these as opposed to an exec for example?

Mechanically, none really, just Special edition models -> Optioned up Exec's.

There's no way that any second gen would be pushing 155KW in stock factory form. The SI models were all automatic, weren't they?

I believe the SI had a spoiler and mags as stock, but still has the same 2972cc engine. Stuff like ABS/colour coding too.

nah there were manuals and 4 bangers as well; the 3rd gen th v6 si has 155kw i think..
