View Full Version : Fuel economy on a KR Verada

30-10-2003, 06:52 PM
The Verada that I use (done about 260k) drains it's tank in 380km. Is this normal, or can something be done to improve it?

Also, it keeps on blowing the passenger side highbeam headlight. This isn't helpful, as they see a lot of use.

Any assistance?

My modified KS gets about 550km per tank. I always refill it when its done
about 450km. I drive it heavily as well.

Are you sure that the tank is empty when its done 380km? How many
litres do you fill up when its done 380km? if its about 50litres then the tank
is not empty as the tank capacity is 64 litres.
The magna/verada amber low fuel warning light comes on very early when
you still have between 10 and 20 litres left.

260k, when was the last injector clean, fuel filter replacement. Also in the injector seals are leaking there is another source of poor economy as well as the dist shaft bushes.
With a car of this milage there will be routine maintenance you will need to have done, most of which will improve economy.
As for the globe, check your earth or change the branch of globe perhaps. If there was a serious electrical problem you would blow more than 1 high beam globe.
Cheers, hope this helps

Usually takes around 60 litres then (About a pineapple to fill) We know for a fact that the low fuel light doesn't work...

what sort of mods have u done to ur ks to get that sort of petrol acconomy? mines 450k to empty :( such an expensive car but worth it by far

if i granny drive my TS and ride the warning light i can get 550km plus to a tank!
to get a semi accurate fuel economy fill ur tank right up till the bowser clicks then zero ur trip meter, next time u need petrol fill up till the bowser clicks and for example if u fit 40L in and done 400km on the trip meter u got 10L/100km fuel economy which is what i normally get

yeah I fill up to the click then reset my odometor each time to work it out. I get pretty crap economy unfortunately :(

The car is a 94 TS, 3.0L V6, Auto, 17x7 wheels, 2.5" muffler, K&N Panel Filter... so no modifications that would affect the fuel economy by very much.

On average about 6.5 to 7.0kms per Litre (14 to 15L's per 100kms) approx.

I normally fill just under the 1/4 tank marking on the fuel guage - which takes about 45 litres, and reads between 290kms and 315kms on the guage.

I do city driving - generally short 15 - 20 minute trips twice a day. If I get on the highway my economy can be as good as 10kms per litre - or around 450kms at the 1/4 fuel guage marking.

I know other people get better economy - its very frustrating because I've sent close to $1000 and three different mechanics to see if they can find out why im using so much fuel, and they all tell me the car is fine and theres no problems. O2 sensor is sensing correctly apparently (in a workshop environment), Injectors have been cleaned, I run Premium Unleaded, my emissions are correct (although one mechanic did say it was running rich at higher load), and the car seems to run reasonbly well. I guess my only option is to put up with it unfortunately :(

Does my fuel economy seem extremely bad to everyone or am I not the only one?

I presume you are asking me. the mods are pretty much standard for a
magna/verada. k&n oval pod with cold air ducting (those holes you see on
the bottom corners of the bumper) and heat shielding. I'm about to make
a metal enclosure to improve it a bit more. Adjustable rising rate fuel
pressure regulator set to 45. BOSH platinum sparks (6). 65mm throttle
body and plenum chamber. 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust with 2.5" hi-flow
cat, 2.5" staight-thru resonator and muffler with 3x4" tip. The section
between the header and the cat is from the TF sports models which had a
better flow rather than the T-junction setup of the kr/ks/tr/ts models. Its
also lowered 1.5" front and 2" back with king springs and munroe GT gas
shockers. 16x7" performance fx5 alloys with 225/50zr16 goodyear f1gsd3
tyres pumped up to 40 at front and 38 at rear. These are all performance
mods and not fuel economy mods. Plus, the car is now heavier than a
factory KS Verada xi as the spare wheel is also the 16x7" performance fx5
with 225/50vr16 goodyear tyres. I've put extra noise suppresion matting
in the boot between the boot carpet and the metal body.

In regards to fuel economy, i put $40 of BP Ultimate into my car when I get petrol, and from that I get between 380 - 420 Km's. Depends on how I drive it...

$40 is very subjective. how many litres do you fill up for that many k's

I cannot believe how bad my economy is after reading these posts!

I have a stock-standard TS V6 Auto which gets driven very gently. Most trips are around the town and not very long, however....

From about 45 litres (this is how much I can put in the car once the empty light comes on) I get 300km MAX.

so: 45 / 3 = 15L per 100km

For a car which has always been in the family, serviced on time, very good condition and otherwise runs very well etc etc it's pretty bad on fuel correct?

silver_ts - I get around the same kind of economy... same litres, same number of K's. Mine are also short trips around town.

However when I take the car for a long highway drive I can get closer to 450kms for the 45 litres - instead of 300kms.

i normally get bout 400-450, (2.6l TR manual)

But i've been doing alot of highway driving and its on about 520km at the moment and still have 1/4 tank left.... ;)

Wow is your vehicle thirsty!
I have a TS V6 Wagon which regulary returns between 520 and 620klm per 71ltr tank of fuel.
My vehicle travels another 100klm when the fuel gauge says emtpy and the light comes on.
How many klm's has the vehicle done?
My TS has 113000klm on the clock.
I also have a TR 4 Cylinder Wagon (173000klm)which returns between 520-620klm / 71ltr tank.
Does it need a tune up?
Sounds like a trip to someone like Ultratune.
I use Mobil XHP Plus oil and change it and the filter at 5000klm intervals regularly.
I aslo use geniune Mitsubishi oil filters.

When i first bought my car i was getting 250km's to a 60 litre tank! Then i realise OD was off so turning that on increased it to 350 kms, then i got the car serviced and it was up to 550-600, now its at 490km, but hopefully when i service my car next week it'll go back up to the 600 mark, my car has done just over 270000km.
