I bought my car (2000 TJ Executive) July last year and above the side indicators there is a 3.5 (3.5L) badge. I have just looked over my Rego papers and realised that the Engine Capacity says 2972.0? Then i had a look at my parents rego papers as they have a 3.5L TJ aswell and theirs says the Engine Capacity is 3497.0. Does this mean i was led to belive my car was a 3.5L (due to the badges) when it was actually only a 3L. If this is correct then it's bull****, i thought due to the badging it would be a 3.5L. The stupid azz car salesmen probably just put the 3.5L badges on it to make more money from it:flame:! I paid way tooo much for the car to begin with (this is before i joined AMC and i didn't know how much Magnas were worth) and now i've paid WAAAAAAY TOOO MUCH if its only a 3L ! Also i will be very dissapointed with my car if its only a 3L! Is my car a 3L or 3.5L?

I was just looking at another thread in the 3rd Gen section and found this post!
Look at the engine number. If it says 6G72 its a 3.0 litre. 6G74 is a 3.5. With the frameless windows i never wind mine down over @ 140 'cause i can never get the things wound up again!
The engine number on my Rego papers is the 6G74 which apparently is the 3.5L but why is there a difference between my and my parents TJ's Engine Capacities? Im really confused now?

I wouldnt stress about the rego papers.. I would be lookin at the actual engine number on the block.. Paperwork can have errors, and somehting like that I wouldnt worry too much about, as long as the VIN's match.

What do u mean the block? Is the engine number written under the hood somewhere? I sound like a NEWB....i don't know anything when it comes to the engine!

If your engine number is 6G74 then its a 3.5L :D nothing to worry about... i guess they stuffed up when u rego'd it similar to when insurance companies ask if its a 3l or 3.5l

Im only going off what the Rego papers said so maybe they have the wrong engine number down rather then the wrong capacity? Does it say anywhere on the car itself? I just had a look everywhere under the hood but it doesn't say the engine number anywhere! Well me and my bro couldn't see it...we had a good look!

Engine number is on the inside front cover of your "service and Warranty" booklet. The engine number will look like 6g72xxxxxxxxxxx or 6g74xxxxxxxxxxxx (xxxx's indicate lots of other numbers), as stated, a 6g72 is a 3.0L and a 6g74 is a 3.5L.

Engine number is on the compliance plate, pretty sure it's printed under the VIN number. The compliance plate is rivited to the top of the firewall in the engine bay, behind the airbox. The engine number will look like 6g72xxxxxxxxxxx or 6g74xxxxxxxxxxxx (xxxx's indicate lots of other numbers), as stated, a 6g72 is a 3.0L and a 6g74 is a 3.5L.
I was also under the impression that 3.0L's had silver rocker covers, and 3.5L's had black rocker covers......... but this is only going off the magna engine bays I've seen personally - so I could be mistaken.
Your info is wrong !
My 1998 TF 3.0lt has black rocker covers !

if your dads car is definatly a 3.5, then it should go as hard as your car. is there much of a power difference between your car and his? does his feel faster or does it feel the same?
besides, are you happy with the power of your car? it not worth getting all bent up over it, the difference obviously wasn't noticable to you in the first place.

If you are talking about the engine block it is that big heavy thing that sits under the intake manifold !
If you want to know where the numbers are on the engine block then you will find them obscured so refer to your owners manual in the glove box as it will be written in the front cover along with the radio codes !

Its a 3.5L because of those two vac solenoids with orange connectors at the front if the intake plenum. They control the exhaust gas recirculation - which the 3.0L hasn't got.
Also on the black rubber bend between the throttle body and filter box will be stamped 3.5.(where it clamps onto the Airflow meter).

Doesnt it say it on the rocker cover? or the Plenum at all?
IcE_BoX
20-02-2006, 04:53 PM
I thought its usually on the rocker cover but it wasn't....whats the Plenum? Im a n00b when it comes to engine stuff!

The plenum is the big silver thing with 6 tubes on top of the engine. It takes the air down to the inlet manifold then into the heads.

of the subject but looking at the photo the top tank on the radiator looks brown..if so keep and eye on it and start saving for a new one or new top and bottom tank as its a sign of cracking

I wouldnt be telling them. Isnt your rego cost determined on engine capacity?

i'd be telling them...u really wanna lie to the government go ahead, but i see only bad things on the horizon if ya do! besides the cost difference in rego wouldnt be great
IcE_BoX
21-02-2006, 07:52 PM
The rego cost is same as my parents 3.5 TJ? Only thing different on our rego slip is the engine capacity? The car was already registered when i bought it so its not like i told them the wrong information?
Sidewinder42
21-02-2006, 07:59 PM
Rego usually based on number of cylinders, not so much on capacity. Well, that's what I've been told. But I think you might pay more for turbo etc as well.
greenmatt
21-02-2006, 08:24 PM
Actually I think in NSW it used to be on capacity.
These are the things that make up the components of the current rego calculator.
Vehicle make and model
*
Body type
*
Tare weight
*
Registration usage
*
Market value / Purchase price (whichever is greater)
So I would agree with spackbace and go ahead and tell them, not that its going to make any difference.

Hey it was just a typo in the first place and if your parrents are paying the same price for their 3.5 ltr as you are paying for the "typo errored" 3ltr/3.5ltr then their is no reason to rock the boat...
No defrauding the commonweath out of money sort of thing happening there !
If you are still concerned then when you go to the front counter to pay the rego you could just tell them they made an error...
BUT they "MAY" or "MAYNOT" require it to be verified by going over the pits and check VIN numbers and motor numbers to ensure its not a chop job or stolen on their part !
It is your call but if there is no fraud then there is no problem !
It sounds like an over reaction and besides the car has been rego'd for years and when it went to the yard for resale it would have been transfered into the dealers yard number and then onsell to you... changed into your name and so on...
so if they have not picked it up by now they never will !
Besides I think the traffic people have better things to do with their time then sit their at their computer screens and go thru 20 million car rego's and say.... Gee Betty... do think this magna has a 3ltr motor or a 3.5ltr motor in it ? We better check as its a breach of national security....
Come on guys... think about it !
