Looking for a midrange double din system... prefer tape & CD. Don't need anything too fancy.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd be looking at spending $500 (give or take a bit).
Cheers.

i saw a few on ebay the other day that were in that price range.
Clarion, JVC, Kenwood and Pioneer are the most common double DIN units, not many look good to me tho (IMO).
I have a double DIN Kenwood CD/MD player, but it came with the car :)

could always just go 2 seperate units? say a tape player and a proper cd/mp3 player? means u'd find alot more and probably for cheaper! aftermarket tape player (if they still exist) would be like $150 tops, and plug it into the cd/mp3 unit. or u could go a tape HU, and a cd changer in the glovebox/boot? have the other slot for a screen or some such? just ideas :)
*Edit*
This looks like a pretty good unit:

for $500, you'll be looking at a lower end double-din (lower end of the better brands, if you get me) for some reason even the regular double dins are $700-$900!!
but for cheap, good quality headunits, JVC is very hard to go past! pick it up!

my favourite is this Clarion one. Nice and simple. I saw it at WOW for around $600 or so and i would probably get it if it werent for the fact its only got 1 set of RCA's

I like the look of that clarion system. I prefer systems with less bling (if you know what I mean). I don't want something that screams "steal me" :D
I was looking at this system on ebay

Only single CD, which is a bummer, but I assume it can have a stacker attached, and I love the fact that it is understated, yet looks expensive.
Any thoughts?

yeh i don't mind the look of that one either, and 2 sets of RCA's. Pioneer do make good units. Oh and just so u know I bought some tweeters off that seller the other day and it seems to be going smoothly. Being shipped out today I've been told :)
EDIT: here is a better picture of it too, looks nice:

So the next question is... if I buy something on ebay, are there any installers that will put it in for me? :D I could do it myself, but I just don't have the time to spend half a day taking apart the dash, soldering, etc.

yeah most places will still install it for you, some will ask for a reciept to ensure it wasn't stolen or anything, but most will be fine! from what i can remember, most places would charge about $80 for a standard headunit install
Hi guys, I had this double-DIN Sony head unit, and it was just fantastic.
As a secondary school music teacher myself, I am particular about sound quality when it comes to listening, and I was very impressed with the Sony. It does have various features which enable you to "enhance" the sound if you so wish, and indeed a certain amount of tweaking yielded really good sound from the factory paper-cone speakers.
I have not come across another head unit which can transform the sound quality like this one. You can buy it for $489 at JB-HIFI (I'm in Brisbane)......the RRP is $990, but because double-DIN units seem to have limited appeal here, audio stores are discounting them heavily.
In fact there is one being sold on E-Bay as we speak!

That's not a bad system. I tend to favour Sony and Pioneer, since I've always had good experiences with both brands. Not very scientific :D
