Hi guys,

just hoping for a bit of help if possible, ive read a few of the topics here on rough idling but it gets too complicated for me, please excuse my ignorance.

ive never had auto cars in the past, just manuals so im a bit daunted when it comes to problems with the transmission (possibly?)

anyway ive just bought a 93 magna executive, kind of sold as seen situation, the ins and outs of it are my boss has bought a load of cars and offered me one, to be paid off weekly (2500), i couldnt get any sort of finance or loans because ive just emigrated here 5 months ago so this was the only way i could get a much needed car.

anyway, problem #1 is the car drives fine, but when i slow down for traffic lights the engine idles dangerously low, comes back up again and then drops just under 1000, sometimes stalling.
it only seems to happen in reverse or drive, doesnt seem to be so bad in low or 2nd.

problem #2 is although the temperature gauge is showing normal, im sometimes getting a heat smell in and outside the car, when i leave the car sitting the fan comes on quite frequently as well.

does anybody have any thoughts on either or these?

any help at all would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance guys.

Brian.

thermofans normally come on while sitting; esp in the hot sun; thats normal; just get your throttle body and all it electrical connections taken apart and cleaned as in that how to; a mechanic mate would help...
if not take it too a mechanic

common problem regarding the heat mate, the astrons don't enjoy the hot summer springs haha checking water pump radiator ect ect is good plus making sure your fan connections are all running

or...bonnet vents :P

the stalling problem try this, run the car then put the a/c on, the car should drop aprox 250-350rpm from idle then .5-1second later it should rise back up a tad over normal idle, if it doesnt do this chances are the idle control motors died

as for the heating issue make sure to check that theres coolent in the radiator and some in the overflow, check that there isnt any leaks, and make sure the themostat works as well, also might be worth to flush the whole system

There is an idle stop screw that you can adjust to stop the car from stalling , it might force the idle to go a bit higher then normal at times but at least its still far safer then stalling. If the temp gauge is sitting level then i've wouldn't worry about the cooling system. The fan coming on frequently is a good sign.

thanks for the input folks, im gonna try the screw tomorrow and if that fails i might take it to a mechanic, thing is ive only just got the car and i got cos i desperately needed it, so im not sure i can afford to leave it into a mechanic just now, but its really starting to **** me.

Hey there,

Could you post back the tachometer reading when the car has warmed up and in Neutral?

Cheers.

Hey there,

Cheers.

the neutral idle is 700rpm but sometimes when im at stopped at lights it will jump up and down a bit and eventually stall.

ive taken to putting it into neutral every time i have to stop, 9 times out of 10 this will stop it from stalling, but sometimes as i say it will still stall even in neutral.

note this only happens once she's at the halfway temperature mark, ive read most of the threads on this forum about this and similiar problems, but i really dont know what im doing when it comes to engines unfortunately :( its my first magna and my first auto as well
